Day 1 and 2 of being unemployed was spent learning about and setting up The Tuva Project by Tuva Health on my local machine with DuckDB as a data backend and dbt Labs running the transforms. It's amazing what you can do *for free* with #opensource tools even in the healthcare space! If I had a claims and clinical source, I would already have a normalized data model plus a host of analytics at my fingertips including HCCs, PMPM, readmissions, and quality measures!

They’re leading the way in transforming data management and interoperability across healthcare. If you’re not familiar with their work, you should definitely check them out! Steph Weber’s recent article highlights both the promise and challenges of open-source software (OSS) in healthcare. While other industries have embraced OSS for its flexibility and scalability, healthcare has been cautious due to security and compliance concerns. However, that caution is giving way as organizations see OSS’s ability to break down data silos and improve care delivery. From streamlining complex data analysis to enhancing interoperability through APIs, OSS is driving new opportunities. As Aaron Neiderhiser, CEO of Tuva Health, noted, “Every other industry is using [open source] because it enables this unique go-to-market distribution where users can try out the software, get familiar with it, and join a community of people working to improve it.” But with these opportunities come responsibilities—particularly around security, strategic planning, and data management. For OSS to thrive in healthcare, we must hold it to the same standards as proprietary systems while harnessing its potential for collaboration and transparency. It's come to my attention that the Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) -- an important dataset measuring 158 variables related to social determinants of health -- has been taken down from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website. It's not a stretch to say this dataset was used by thousands of healthcare researchers and analysts. The fact that it's no longer available really sucks. Healthcare generates more complex data than any other industry. It's easy to understand why: we are trying to model all of human biology and the delivery of medicine in a single dataset. As a consequence, managing and transforming healthcare data is enormously challenging. Since I started working in healthcare in 2011 I've seen the cost of doing this explode but the data we analyze hasn't gotten much better. This is precisely what we're working to solve at Tuva Health in an open-source and transparent way.
