About us
Founded at the end of the Second World War, the United Nations is an international organization made up of 193 Member States committed to maintaining international peace and security. Every day the UN works to tackle global challenges and deliver results for those most in need. Giving life-saving support to populations hit by humanitarian crises, helping build and keep the peace in conflict-ridden areas, supporting governments and their citizens to advance development and fight poverty, and promoting human rights worldwide are the core pillars of the work of the United Nations and the mandates it receives from its Member States. All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights enshrines that rights are for all people, regardless of their nationality, gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, belief, or any other status. From calling out discrimination and speaking up against injustices to volunteering in support of vulnerable communities, there are many ways each of us can #StandUp4HumanRights and help achieve a world of freedom, equality and justice for all. “2024 has brought unfathomable sorrow for people around the world. Conflicts have intensified, inflicting pain and suffering on a massive scale,” said UN Secretary-General António Guterres reflecting on the challenges faced by people globally this past year. “This pain is keenly felt across our United Nations family. We have lost cherished colleagues who made the ultimate sacrifice in carrying out our vital mission,” he said, adding: “We honour their memory and grieve together.” “But even in the darkest hours, United Nations personnel are a constant beacon of hope and light —delivering lifesaving aid and working tirelessly to advance peace, human rights, climate action and sustainable development. I am deeply privileged and profoundly grateful to serve alongside them.”

The spread of misinformation, disinformation and hate online is causing grave harm to our world. This past June, UN Secretary-General António Guterres launched the United Nations Global Principles for Information Integrity, aiming to foster a more humane information ecosystem. “Opaque algorithms push people into information bubbles and reinforce prejudices including racism, misogyny and discrimination of all kinds,” said the Secretary-General. “Everyone should be able to express themselves freely without fear of attack. Everyone should be able to access a range of views and information sources,” he added, urging coordinated international action to counter the unprecedented proliferation and expansion of threats to information integrity.
