The malaria outbreak in the DRC's Kwango province is a tragic reminder that remote areas often lack access to malaria testing and other vital tools. In 2023, a record number (448.5 million) of malaria rapid diagnostic tests were manufactured. But significant coverage gaps still exist, leaving many hard-to-reach regions unequipped to prevent and monitor outbreaks. Beat Malaria supports a malaria project in Kwango province that distributed 100,000 next-generation mosquito nets. Insecticide-treated bed nets are the foundation of malaria control. While mosquitoes were developing resistance to traditional nets, scientists were staying ahead of the curve by developing something new: nets powered by two ingredients that could fight back against resistance. These nets aren't just cutting malaria rates by half where they're used – they're transforming communities. Peaceful nights for families, healthier children in classrooms, parents who can plan beyond tomorrow. In studies over 4 years, next-generation dual nets have protected 13 million people and saved 24,000 lives. Today, as these nets reach more families, we are continuing to innovate. Standing still isn't an option. Happy to have collaborated with BASF and United to Beat Malaria to tell this story. We're in this together and the #NextChapterOfProgress starts here, with all of us. #ZeroMalaria #GlobalHealth #WorldMalariaReport https://lnkd.in/g9FREYdn

The 2024 World Malaria Report shows significant progress: 2.2 billion cases and 12.7 million deaths have been prevented since 2000. But there is still work to be done. A malaria-free world means reaching those most at risk: refugees, internally displaced people, children under 5, and communities without access to malaria interventions. ⚖️ 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗮𝗽𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁𝘆-𝗳𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 Our latest 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗮 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 features a special chapter emphasizing the need for inclusive action to protect those most vulnerable to malaria—communities living in poverty, children and pregnant women, displaced and marginalized populations, and other hard-to-reach groups. The chapter was developed in close collaboration with my colleague Alia El-Yassir and her team in the WHO Programme for Gender Equality, Human Rights and Health Equity, with contributions from the Centre for Gender Studies and Advocacy at the University of Ghana. Various factors—biological, environmental, social, structural and economic—heighten vulnerability to malaria and make it harder for certain groups to access preventive and treatment services. These factors often intersect, compounding an individual’s risk of a malaria infection and its consequences. Addressing overlapping vulnerabilities requires data-driven policies and actions that are gender-responsive, equity-oriented, and grounded in human rights. WHO urges countries to: 1. 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗲 primary health care as the backbone of equitable health systems; 2. 𝗔𝗱𝗱𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 gender inequities and other social determinants of health in malaria strategies; 3. 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁 in robust data systems to monitor and address health inequities; 4. 𝗘𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 equity, gender equality, and human rights are embedded in antimalarial innovations, with affected communities involved in designing and evaluating new tools. Reflecting on this year’s World Health Day theme – “My health, my right” – the path towards a malaria-free world requires equitable solutions, with meaningful community engagement as a critical pillar of success. The need to spend large amounts out-of-pocket to access health services is placing 1 in 8 people worldwide at risk of poverty due to out-of-pocket health expenditure of 10% or more of their household budget. Governments must adequately invest in #HealthForAll and protect people – particularly the most vulnerable among us – from impoverishing health spending. Learn more: https://bit.ly/3OGl5hA

The #WorldMalariaReport is an annual barometer of progress and setbacks in the fight against this deadly disease. The good news? Since 2000, the death rate has been cut in half, 26 countries have eliminated the disease, and 2.2 billion malaria cases have been averted. But despite these impressive gains, 2023 saw 11 million more cases than the year before. Equitable access to key interventions remains critical. Last year, 255 million insecticide-treated bed nets reached families, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa. 20% of these were new, next-generation dual active-ingredient nets. While six in ten young children and expectant mothers were sleeping under nets, in the overall population at risk, only about half were doing so. These numbers matter more as social and environmental factors make it harder to get nets to every family that needs one – but it's never been more important.
