The award-winning University of Minnesota Libraries is one of the U's and the state’s greatest intellectual assets.
About us
Welcome to the award-winning University of Minnesota Libraries, one of the University’s and the state’s greatest intellectual assets. In 2017, we won the National Medal for Museum and Library Service from the Institute for Museum and Library Services — becoming only the third academic library to win the award in 23 years. We also received the 2009 Excellence in Academic Libraries award from the Association of College and Research Libraries, a division of the American Library Association. Our expert librarians can connect you with the resources you need — from the millions of volumes held in our general collections to the treasures of our archives and special collections, from tools to enhance your productivity to programs and services to help you expand the reach of your research. Whatever you're looking for, look to us to be your partners in learning, teaching, and research.

February is nearly over, of course, but Black history happens all year long. At the Archives and Special Collections, our curators are always working to connect researchers to the historical resources they need. Check out some of our highlights from throughout the year. #BlackHistoryMonth #UMNproud

Karni Scholarship awardee, Christopher Campbell. The award programs support travel for researchers, so that they may visit the collections in the IHRCA and advance their research. Congratulations to all! https://lnkd.in/guS-hxnC

From designing new lessons on rural and urban land use, to charting how Native American land has shifted over the centuries, teachers from the Borchert Map Library’s second annual teacher fellowship are reshaping geography education for K-12 students across Minnesota. “This fellowship allowed us to pursue what we’re passionate about and what we feel like students would really need,” said Kathryn Rotunda, a social studies teacher at Chaska Middle School East. “I’d love to do it again, but I know that’s not an option. I was just really impressed with the time that we were given, and the resources and the partnerships that were created.” https://lnkd.in/gY-9zYkD

Last December, the Interdisciplinary Journal of Partnership Studies (IJPS) celebrated its 10-year anniversary of publishing an open-access scholarship that seeks to improve our society through principles of partnership. IJPS is a volunteer-run, peer-reviewed, and biannual journal developed by the Center for Partnership Systems , the University of Minnesota Libraries, and the University of Minnesota School of Nursing . Since its founding, IJPS has published 24 issues and 230 articles by more than 330 authors. “There’s so much more that IJPS is capable of doing as we continue to grow, and we have to do it together,” said incoming IJPS Executive Editor Stephanie Gingerich. “We’re really looking forward to what these next few years, 10 years if we’re fortunate enough, will look like.” https://lnkd.in/g6UP6Xxp

After working at the University for 26 years, the Libraries' Director of Advancement Mark Engebretson, a U of M alumni and first-generation college student, is retiring. “My team is great. I love the University of Minnesota," Engebretson said. "The University is so critical to the state of Minnesota. So I’ll miss the people. I’ll miss the University.” Engebretson is a former journalist for Lillie Suburban News and the Southwest Journal, a vocalist for the Whole Lotta Loves and The Silverteens, director of the documentary, "Jay's Longhorn: Let's Make A Scene," and co-host of "Some Kinda Fun," a show about local music in the Twin Cities. Before coming to the Libraries, he was the electronic communications manager for the Academic Health Center and later the director of digital media strategy at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health . https://lnkd.in/gw2Nq6_K

Last Saturday, nearly 70 K-12 students and their families came from across Minnesota to Wilson Library to participate in Gopherbaloo, a History Day research open house. Students got one-on-one support on their projects, conducted research using our physical and online collections and databases, attended mini-lessons about writing theses and working with sources, and won fabulous raffle prizes! Not long after his 20th birthday in 1971, Larry Long packed his life into his guitar case and left Minnesota to follow in the footsteps of his role model, Woody Guthrie. Now approaching 74, Long is an accomplished folk musician and singer-songwriter, performing across the world, and in 2014, he was inducted into the National Old Time Music Hall of Fame. Long recently donated his materials to the University of Minnesota Libraries’ Performing Arts Archives, and his entire collection will be digitized over the next three years thanks to a $300,000 grant from the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) . https://lnkd.in/g3JJs6XP
