Flora and Fauna Illustrata (FFI), a long-term project documenting the diversity of life at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, has an exciting (temporary) new home: the Minneapolis Central Library, where it will be on display through January 26, 2025. The project began in 2015 as a partnership between #UMN's Andersen Horticultural Library and the Arboretum. The University of Minnesota Libraries’ Michael Corey – the geospatial, technical, and data lead for Mapping Prejudice – recently received the Research and Innovation Office’s 2024 Research Technical Staff Award. The Research Technical Staff Award recognizes 10 U of M staff each year for their “distinguished service” to the research community and for their “exemplary leadership.” “I feel very proud to be representing the humanities on the research side and demonstrating that people in the humanities are doing high-level technical research,” Corey said. https://lnkd.in/gCFpa3qt

Since the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision, which overturned Roe v. Wade, legislation restricting abortion and contraceptives has increased, coupled with growing maternal care deserts. For Jenny Schmid, a professor of printmaking, control of reproductive healthcare is reflected in medical literature, in how women’s bodies are segmented and dissected. To recontextualize the pregnant body, Schmid collaborated with Emily Beck and Lois Hendrickson, curators of the Wangensteen Historical Library, and Jaime Konerman-Sease, a clinical ethics assistant professor, to create the folio and exhibit, “Disembodied Reembodied.” The exhibit examines obstetrical images and depictions of women’s bodies from the library’s collection, spanning over 500 years of history, and considers how the medical gaze has affected the ways people receive care. Tomorrow, the team will hold an exhibit reception at the Wangensteen from 5 to 7 p.m., to discuss the prints, historical texts, and the project. https://lnkd.in/emvQG_Tn

Mapping Prejudice is opening up its methods and making its tools more accessible so communities across the country can identify and map racial covenants. These efforts of co-creation and knowledge sharing were made possible by a recent $786,000 grant from the Mellon Foundation. “We want to create resources that teams can use in their own communities to document racial covenants,” said Kirsten Delegard, Mapping Prejudice’s project director. https://lnkd.in/guDZJsca

When Elizabeth Blake talks with other people about librarianship, they usually don’t know what librarians actually do. So when she was accepted into the Minnesota Institute earlier this year, a program for early career librarians from traditional underrepresented groups, she felt right at home. “It was almost like a safe place where I could just let my guard down. There were a lot of librarians that were in the same boat as me, early career librarians trying to learn their footing,” Blake said. https://lnkd.in/gkGE22MB
