Two semesters. Sixteen engineering students. Hours and hours of work, planning, sprints, collaborating and coding, all to meet a mission we all felt mattered. These students are incredibly talented engineers, skilled, forward thinking and ever evolving. They solved complex challenges by adopting and implementing AI solutions in ways never deployed before. The work product they delivered shows the brilliance of their integration and success as a team. But that’s not even the most impressive part of all. As their leader, I walked in with a problem I needed to solve. I shared with them my personal mission to empower the voices of individuals, a project driven by mine and my children’s experiences of being silenced and separated, by individuals and systems that sought to control us- and in very serious ways, still do. We took this mission further, to discuss the needs of students, educators and administrators on campuses across the world- to place value on real- time sentiment analysis so all voices could be heard. Whether it was about class schedules, social protests, accessibility, school safety threats, campus violence, parking tickets or ongoing activities, these students thoughtfully designed a tool to LISTEN to understand and analyze sentiment, followed by an impressive platform and dashboard to provide data driven INSIGHTS, to facilitate responsive ACTION by leaders. What’s next is exciting to see unfold. We’ve only just begun. Out of adversity comes great opportunity, and a personal reminder for me that just because my wings may be clipped momentarily, it doesn’t prohibit me from teaching others how to fly. Congrats to these amazing seniors. It’s been an honor to be on this journey with you and I am forever grateful. Onward.
