About us
VegTech™ Invest is an investment management company that advises a Plant-based Innovation ETF. It also produces a Plant-based Innovation & Alternative Proteins index as an industry benchmark. VegTech Invest invests in public companies that are actively innovating with plants and plant-derived ingredients and that produce primary products that are animal-free. We believe these companies positively impact climate change, planetary health and sustainability, human health, and animal health. We also believe that we are on the cusp of a long-term secular trend that will result in the disrupting of the global food and materials supply chain for a more efficient, climate friendly and sustainable. ❓ Is sustainable investing living up to its promise? BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager, is facing scrutiny for its role in addressing climate change and human rights issues. According to a recent report by Jonathan Watts in The Guardian, activists argue that the firm's actions fall short of its sustainability pledges, particularly in aligning its investments with global climate goals and protecting human rights in the supply chain. While BlackRock has made strides in advocating for net-zero emissions and sustainability and good management priorities, the report highlights gaps between rhetoric and results. 🌲 Notably, the firm continues to hold significant stakes in companies tied to fossil fuels and deforestation—key drivers of climate instability. As impact investing grows, people want to know that their dollars are not invested in companies that harm the environment. 🌱 At VegTech™ Invest, we know that food production contributes up to one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions. Thus, aligning our investments with sustainable food system practices is essential to mitigating climate risks and ensuring long-term resilience. The path forward demands accountability, transparency, and a commitment to transformative action—not just from companies but from the financial institutions that fund them. ❓ What does a truly regenerative economy look like? 🎙 Matt Patsky, CEO of Trillium Asset Management, puts it succinctly in a recent episode of the Upside & Impact: Investing for Change podcast: “How do we create a 21st century economy that is much more regenerative in nature and restorative?… It’s a huge opportunity.” 🌱 Investing in food systems transformation is one of the most critical pathways to achieving this vision. By supporting innovations in sustainable agriculture, plant-based solutions, diversified proteins and circular food economies, we can restore ecosystems, build resilience, and create long-term value. 📈 The transition to regenerative systems isn’t just an environmental imperative—it’s a business opportunity. Forward-thinking investors have the chance to lead by aligning portfolios with solutions that prioritize health, equity, and sustainability. How are you positioning yourself to be part of this transformation? Let’s shape a future that thrives for both our portfolios and our planet. What’s the cost of water? 🌊 The EPA’s proposed “Slaughterhouse Rule” is set to have significant economic and environmental impacts, according to a new analysis by Marc Yaggi in GreenMoney Journal. Slaughterhouses are among the largest industrial water polluters in the U.S., discharging over 28 million pounds of nitrogen and phosphorus annually—key contributors to harmful algal blooms and dead zones in waterways. 🌎 The rule aims to tighten pollution limits, saving ecosystems but potentially increasing costs for producers by $400 million annually, a drop in the bucket compared to the environmental and health damages. 💧 Cleaner water standards mean healthier communities and ecosystems. However, the projected costs highlight the urgent need for innovation in food systems to balance environmental protection with economic viability. 💡 This is a pivotal and necessary moment for food systems transformation. Most are only aware of egregious emissions (32% of the world’s methane emissions come from the animal ag sector) but are not aware of the air pollution and extreme water usage and pollution of the industry. 🌱 Plant-based and diversified proteins present opportunities to reduce pollution at the source while meeting growing demand sustainably. Companies and investors at the forefront of this shift are not just protecting water resources—they’re shaping the future of food. 👉 How can businesses adapt to ensure compliance and sustainability? ❓ Did you know plant-based meat cuts environmental impact by 89%? 📄 The Good Food Institute recently came out with their latest Life Cycle Assessment of plant-based versus animal-based meats. The LCA showed that plant-based meat can significantly improve the sustainability and efficiency of the food system. 💡 Some of the specific key findings were: 🌱 Plant-based meat has, on average, 91% lower environmental impacts than pork, and 71% lower impacts than chicken. 💧 On average, plant-based meat uses 79% less land, 95% less water, and reduces water pollution by 93% compared to animal meat. 🌽 Using real-world commercial data, plant-based meats consistently show lower environmental impacts across different ingredients, protein sources, and production methods, and can be scaled with minimal natural resources. 🌎 These are just more concrete reasons why transitioning to a food system made of diversified proteins is better for the planet.
