AFROTECH 2024 was an experience to remember! ✨ From the time I arrived in Houston, I felt an incredible sense of belonging and excitement. This weeks marks 1 year sober from a struggle with OxyContin. Last year at this time I was taking too many pills and on my way to starting a battle with another addiction. I had a foot surgery and was given pills for pain and like many others I know it started to get out of hand. I fell into my old habits of lying, hiding the pills, trying to find more. But, luckily because I’m in recovery from alcohol and have a good support system I was able to stop before things got out of hand. I knew I needed help, and was able to see my problem faster this time. I haven’t shared this publicly because, well it’s embarrassing. I’m in recovery from alcohol and sober from drinking, but struggled with pills. But, then I remembered why I started my work with Free Life in the first place. And that’s to create connection for people who are choosing to live a substance free life. And connection happens when we are open and honest about ourselves. So if you’re struggling to get sober, I see you I’ve been there and remember recovery is always possible.
