About us

By using appropriate technology and training, WaterStep empowers volunteers and humanitarian professionals with the ability to assist communities with sustainable water solutions. Our hope is that we will see the day when no person in this world has to drink unsafe water. WaterStep takes steps to see this vision become reality by providing training and technology to better equip people to provide sustainable solutions to the water problem. From disaster relief to water treatment and health and hygiene training, our practical solutions are impacting lives and providing clean water for more people. We have a presence in over 20 countries and are continuing to find new areas that need access to clean water. Through our water purification systems, community development and specific training, we are addressing the problems and helping more people gain access to clean water.

  • On this day in 2009, a 6.1 earthquake hit Costa Rica, changing WaterStep’s journey forever. 🗺️ 💧 Our team was already on the ground teaching hygiene and sanitation when the earthquake began. Roads crumbled, bottled water vanished within hours, and people emerged from the jungle covered in mud, searching for hope. Our systems supplied the only safe water available. Thanks to our Chlorine Generator, WaterStep was able to provide safe water to 3,800 displaced people, marking the start of our disaster response efforts. 💧 Looking back, this was the beginning of so much more. As we celebrate 30 years of WaterStep in 2025, we’re reflecting on the stories that shaped us. To everyone who has been part of our story - thank you! Your support has impacted millions of lives, and together, we’ll keep changing the world. 💙

  • We have some exciting announcements as we head into 2025. We’d like to start with some new faces and changes to our board of directors. 💧 A man who needs no introduction in WaterStep circles is the one and only Scott Haner! Scott is the new board of directors’ chairman in 2025, and we couldn’t be more excited about having him at the helm. Scott is a 30-year+ marketing/development executive and has held positions at Yum! Brands/KFC Corporation and General Mills, Inc. He also served on the Board of the International Franchise Association. Scott started volunteering with WaterStep in 2014 and has been a part of projects in Costa Rica, Kenya and Brazil. He has served on the board since 2023. He hopes to continue to leverage his leadership and management skills to increase WaterStep’s impact around the world. A huge congratulations to Scott and thank you for being a part of WaterStep!

  • Meet Simon Ottaviano. Simon's life went from privilege to destitution. He came to America with hopes of writing a new chapter for himself. He would eventually return home to rewrite the safe water story in his homeland of South Sudan. It would take 30 years of fear, abandonment, loneliness, hope — and personal will — to do it. And first, he’d have to escape war. Read the full story of how Simon partnered with WaterStep to change the lives of people he loves the most on our website. #safewater #WaterInnovation #GlobalWaterAccess #SafeWaterSolutions #WaterStep #SustainableWater #WaterAdvocacy #WaterSecurity #WaterForAll #LouisvilleKY #LouisvilleKentucky #WaterMatters #SafeWaterForAll #WaterIsLife
