Please read our latest Marshall Project-Cleveland investigation about two deaths in the Cuyahoga County Jail that published today with my colleague Brittany Hailer and Scott Noll at WEWS-TV. An excellent collaboration. We started on this trek 11 months ago as it became difficult to get the Cuyahoga County government to release hundreds of pages of records and numerous videos of two men dying inside the jail. We went to great lengths to get accurate records. The Ronayne administration slow walked these records. Why? I have no idea. Watch the videos of the last minutes of the two men who died. Read the story and watch the TV report tonight at 6 p.m. You be the judge. The families of these two men who died in the jail could not get answers. We drove to Toledo to show the videos to a family; the family of another man did not watch them. Neither Ronayne nor Sheriff Harold Pretel told the public that the state sanctioned the county for its failures in one of the deaths. A few facts from the story: The deaths of Williams and of Fred Maynard, a double amputee who died five months earlier after choking on a peanut butter and jelly sandwich in front of jailers, raise questions regarding training, preventative medical care and life-saving first aid, the investigation found. County Executive Chris Ronayne’s administration did not inform the 11-member Cuyahoga County Council about the state action plan, according to a statement from Joseph Nanni, the council’s chief of staff. Two medical experts, who reviewed jail records and security video of Williams’ and Maynard’s deaths at the request of the news organizations, said they were alarmed by the jail employees’ response to the medical emergencies.

When the Cleveland Cavaliers won the NBA title in 2016 the parade was legendary and is still glowingly talked about in the city. But it was our son’s unfortunate luck at the time to have two parents that work in television news. It was all hands on deck at our respective stations so neither of us could have the day off to take him. Luckily friends of ours stepped in and took him with their family. His sports allegiances are split between Cleveland where he was born and Philly where I was and he now goes to college at my alma mater Temple University. When it comes to football though he bleeds Philadelphia Eagles green, a passion passed down from my father (a season ticket holder) to me and me to him. So I appreciate having a boss, that when I say to her on Wednesday that I need to get in the car Thursday after anchoring the 5 p.m. news, drive 8.5 hours to Philly (normally 7 but we encountered brutal snow) get in at 3:30 a.m. and back up a 7 a.m. so I could stand for hours in the cold so we could experience the Eagles Super Bowl parade as a family - just stands up, gives me a fist bump and says “go!” So glad we did. From hopping the Broad Street Subway that I basically lived on as a commuter student many years ago to taking it all in with our son in his final semester of college and his friends to walking the closed streets of the city with hundreds of thousands that share the same team passion was absolutely priceless. It is a lifetime memory forged for him and for us that hopefully eclipses all others.
