  • We thrive on creative challenges that allow us to flex our design muscles and create memorable experiences. Introducing Foamcore Coffee, a lifestyle brand from Whipsaw. Foamcore started as a little kernel of an idea: What if we could enhance the experience of enjoying a personalized coffee drink from our Italian espresso machine by giving it a name and imagining a whole world around it? At first, this lived as a simple brain dump of names and logos in Figma, until a lunchtime chat brought it out of the woodwork and gained some fandom. While other names were thrown around, “Foamcore” was an undeniable winner. Foam-core boards are ubiquitous in a design studio. They're an amazingly adaptable material used for everything from mood boarding to post-it note clustering to building early large-scale models. The connection to our design studio and profession, coupled with the obvious callout to foamy cappuccinos, set the foundation for the brand. Now that we had a vision for creating a brand showcase and a name to hang our hat on, we set out to develop the brand for our studio’s favorite coffee spot. Here is the story of how it all came together. ☕

  • We’re moving beyond the screen. The future of product design is tactile—bringing back texture, materiality, and haptics to create deeper, multi-sensory experiences. From physical buttons in cars to the resurgence of vinyl, tactile design is making a comeback, blending digital convenience with the depth of human touch. This shift not only improves usability but also fosters emotional connections, ensuring products resonate on a deeper level. How can brands design for the senses in a screen-dominated world? Tactile design isn’t just functional—it’s memorable. #ProductDesign

🔍 Teardown Library Event Recap with Baukunst 🔍 We had a fantastic time hosting a teardown session with Baukunst, diving deep into Tonal, the at-home fitness device designed by Whipsaw. Notably, the hosts included the design team, engineering from Tonal, and an investor in the product; it takes a team of specialists to bring a product to life. Here are a few insights that sparked great discussions: - Pandemic Impact: The pandemic drove a surge in consumer interest, but Tonal’s team faced supply chain challenges that held back fulfillment—a powerful reminder of how external factors can disrupt even the best-prepared companies. - Ingenious Engineering: We noted several parts doing "double duty," like using the tension system to guide arm movements, and clever software tricks that enhance each physical component’s performance, creating a seamless user experience. - Thoughtful Design Details: The choice to hide screws and use spring-loaded arms speaks to Tonal’s commitment to a clean, high-quality aesthetic, driven by design. - Lessons in Manufacturing: This project underscored the complexities of navigating supply chains, sourcing parts, and working closely with manufacturers—so much to learn beyond pure engineering! Thanks to everyone who joined this fascinating teardown! #TeardownLibrary #Engineering #ProductDesign

There are many ways to measure what good design is, but perhaps the most important measure of any given design is “the positive impact it has on an individual, society or culture”. Of all the WHIPSAW accomplishments from the last 25 years, we’re proud to have done just that – and across many diverse industries. Consumers may not know Whipsaw as the designers behind the products they use, but that’s okay. We get our jollies when we see our creations out in the world doing what they’re supposed to do: improving lives by working well while enabling and delighting end users. In celebration of our 25th year, perhaps a “day in the life” journey of a consumer that encounters 25 Whipsaw-designed products is a fun way to illustrate our impact. Check it out. #industrialdesign #design #experiencedesign #innovation
