Massachusetts museum and library celebrating its most fascinating city - Worcester!

About us

Worcester Historical Museum (WHM) is devoted to collecting and preserving the local history of Worcester MA. It includes a research library of over 7,000 titles, an archive that houses thousands of documents, and a collection of artifacts, all vital to the study of Worcester history. A few examples of WHM's holdings include correspondence of abolitionist Abby Kelley Foster, Blackstone Canal Company records, Civil War era diaries and letters, and artifacts related to Worcester's industrial past, weaponry from the colonial era through World War II, paintings and sculptures, and a significant costume and textile collection. WHM also owns and operates Salisbury Mansion, Worcester's only historic house museum. Built in 1772, it has been restored to its 1830s appearance. Thanks to the voluminous family papers, preserved at the American Antiquarian Society, it is one of the best documented historic houses in New England. Worcester's history is interpreted through a calendar of exhibitions, educational programming, tours and publications. WHM features both permanent installations and changing exhibitions. We are celebrating our 150th year in 2025 with an updated Fuller Industrial Gallery, and renovated entrances and lobby. The Worcester Women's History Project at WHM is celebrating the 175th anniversary of the first National Women's Rights Convention, with a year-long celebration of events and performances which was first held in 1850 in Worcester. Current exhibits - Chin Family, The Magic of Candlepin Bowling (opens 12/12), and Home for the Holidays at Salisbury Mansion (11/29).

"A MAN ON FIRE" Author Douglas Egerton Thursday, February 20 - 6PM Fletcher Auditorium | Museum of Worcester Learn more about Worcester’s famous Thomas Wentworth Higginson with Douglas Egerton, author of “A Man on Fire.” “Mr. Egerton’s biography,” wrote a Wall Street Journal review, “is a welcome picture of a man who battled inequality on a wide range of fronts and maintained relationships with some of the most interesting people of the era…Douglass, John Brown, Lucy Stone, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Mark Twain.” A significant voice in the antislavery and women’s rights efforts of mid-19th century America, Higginson’s mid-century presence in Worcester as minister of the Free Church on Front Street had enormous impact. “Toward the end of his life, he declared, ‘Let me memory perish, if only humanity may be free. This book,” writes the Wall Street Journal, “makes sure that Higginson’s memory is preserved.” Books will be available for purchase following the lecture, courtesy of TidePool BookShop.
