“THE POWER OF ONE” IN A WORLD DIVIDED. Just for the record … The key difference between Publicis and other agency holding companies like WPP, Omnicom, and IPG is that Publicis actually has and makes work a Unique Selling Proposition (USP) … “The Power of One”. That is, the promise and delivery of truly and fully integrated Brand marketing communications services where there are ultimately only two questions to be answered: 1) Are we making money for our clients? and 2) Are we making money for ourselves and shareholders? That’s it. Because one follows the other if the individual agencies and their holding company parents do their jobs harmoniously. Hence, the power of one! “One Brand, One Voice. Please - whatever you do. Don’t put the “manosphere” in your next marketing deck. I know you want to. It’s a new, shiny label right there for the taking. Because that’s what we do as an industry. Rather than understand something, we simply label it, and by labeling it, we pretend to understand it. I’ve seen this manosphere word in about 4-5 articles since the election, including what brands should do about it. Nonsense. Enough. It reminds me of a few weeks ago when in the Wall Street Journal, I read an article about another dreaded term - “chaos marketing.” It sounds interesting. It sounds fun. It sounds extreme. “Chaos marketing.” The examples in the article were fantastic. Sunscreen from a whipped cream can. A tampon brand using ice cream packaging to stand out. This wasn’t chaos, this was clever. Incredibly creative and different ways to capture attention. But by using the word chaos, we reduce the tactics to unintelligent. It’s insulting and demeaning. It makes them appear like random thoughts of surprise, unserious marketing efforts that have no calculation associated with them. Why would a CFO want to fund chaos? Or let’s take it back even further. John Hagerty and Orlando Wood on the Uncensored CMO podcast a few months ago rightfully lambasted the word “consumer.” They were right - it’s a terrible word. It assumes that all your customers want to do is consume - consume media, consume creative, consume your product. That we are all just hungry seekers for content, leeching from one thing to the next. Maybe we’re just people, and the nuances within those people can create exciting opportunities to build product and promotions where those people are? And now we have the manosphere. Sure to be in every strategists 2025 predictions deck. “Aha, this is what the rise of the manosphere means for your brand!” Rather than label, investigate. Understand. Explore. It’s not the manosphere, it’s what young men interact with, talk and think about. It’s why they’re thinking what they’re thinking. It’s not some blunt term that simply means, go partner with Theo Vonn. By labeling trends or phenomenon we keep them at arms length. We don’t need to understand them completely, because we know the label, and that’s enough in a world that prioritizes speed over depth. And we sound even more cringey and detached from offering up any sort of powerful marketing strategies to influence customers. So please, I beg you. No “what the manosphere means for you” predictions for 2025. Do that only if you have already dug beneath the surface.

Unlike traditional advertising, these niche groups or fandoms are driven by shared passions and values. When a group of like minded people come together with a shared passion, it creates a sense of belonging that resonates on a much deeper level. Brands tapping into these communities gain access to hyper-engaged audiences who not only consume content but actively participate in the co-creation and amplification of brand messages. This leads to more organic, word-of-mouth marketing, and higher levels of trust and credibility. Enormous fandoms with terrifyingly vast lore are getting even deeper and rapidly multiplying with the help of speedy algorithms. This article has been written many, many times in my career, yet very little changes. I post this not to rant at the system, but to continue to acknowledge the obvious disparities. Earlier this week, The Wall Street Journal wrote about how Television Advertising has lost its relevance - but I think they're misreading signals. Television advertising remains incredibly powerful - 60% of consumers in our most recent AD.VANTAGE study told us TV ads helped them make purchase decisions - outpacing all other forms of advertising. What I appreciate about this interview with Fabiola Torres is how concise and no-nonsense the answers are. Very little marketingspeak. All killer, no filler. What that does for perception is reveal a company that's very focused and moving in sync to a clear, easy-to-grasp vision. That, in turn, instills confidence with shareholders, analysts, and consumers that this recent run of form for the company is actually sustainable and capable of producing growth. So you know. Exec comms like this matter.

Another record-breaking quarter for out of home (OOH) advertising!   In Q3 2024, OOH ad spend hit an impressive $2.04 billion, a 4.3% increase compared to last year. Digital continues to shine, driving growth with a 7.3% year-over-year rise and now accounting for one-third of total OOH revenue.   Political advertising and top brands like McDonald's, Apple, and Amazon are continuing to double down on their investments to leverage OOH to engage audiences in meaningful ways.   As OOH continues to prove its effectiveness, the future of our medium looks brighter than ever.

Yep, scale still matters in media, especially if you’re an agency. Further agency consolidations aren’t necessarily good news for advertisers, who are facing more competitive conflicts sharing agencies with rival brands and facing reduced transparency as agencies grow more powerful. Possible this could trigger some high profile media pitches in 2025 as rival brands race to secure the best terms within the merged group. #MediaForGrowth https://lnkd.in/g4NnXTsE

✅🖥️ Variety (5/22): “Last year, the writers strike kept boldface names from appearing at the upfronts. This year, everybody turned up the star power to 11. NBCU stuffed its presentation with performances from Little Big Town, Michael Bublé and Kelly Clarkson. Amazon went overboard with a nonstop parade of A-listers, including Reese Witherspoon, Will Ferrell, Jake Gyllenhaal and tennis great Roger Federer, with none other than Alicia Keys as the opening act (and yes, she promoted her Amazon line of skin care products). Disney also hauled out the heavy hitters: Ryan Reynolds, Michelle Williams, Sterling K. Brown, Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez, just to name a few. Opening Disney’s upfront was Emma Stone, introducing CEO Bob Iger while getting in one more plug for her Oscar-winning film “Poor Things.” The sheer number of movie mentions (NBCU took time to debut the trailer to “Wicked”) felt unusual at an event traditionally tailored to ad-supported TV. But in the streaming age, everything’s for sale — and there’s nothing brands like more than cozying their messages up to the biggest names in showbiz. Sports franchises were put on a higher pedestal than usual as networks lean on live games to deliver the audiences that advertisers covet. Sports personalities, from Tom Brady to Jason Kelce to Dawn Staley, were all over the presentations. Fox made it clear to anyone in earshot that it has the Super Bowl next year and it has Brady, a bona fide NFL legend, joining the Fox Sports team in the booth for football season this fall. Disney used a hunk of its time to tub-thumb the future of ESPN. Netflix bragged about landing two Christmas Day NFL games. ✅🖥️ CNBC (5/13): “It does feel like this is a moment, a moment in terms of what the next year, two years will bring," Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav said during the company's earnings call last week. "I said a while back that this is a generational disruption.” Media companies just finished reporting quarterly earnings, which showed traditional TV is still lagging behind streaming and digital when it comes to ad revenue. Traditional TV ad buying during Upfronts is expected to increase about 1% to $18.79 billion this year, according to data from eMarketer. This is an improvement from last year when it was down about 4% to $18.64 billion. Meanwhile, digital advertising spend during the Upfronts and Newfronts — which take place a few weeks ahead of the traditional media events — is expected to increase nearly 32% to $16.45 billion this year, according to eMarketer. There was a general improvement in traditional TV ad revenue last quarter, down 8% as opposed to nearly 16% in the same quarter last year, according to a note from Macquarie senior media tech analyst Tim Nollen.
