Kim Godwin’s choice to step down from her trailblazing role as the first Black woman to lead ABC News is a powerful testament to the complex realities Black women face in leadership. Her tenure, marked by excellence and resilience, also came with seemingly blatant backlash and scrutiny—a reality all too familiar to many of us. As leaders, the burden of exceptionalism can be heavy, especially when our efforts are met with undue criticism rather than the recognition we deserve. This environment underscores a deeper, lasting sting that Black women endure, one that is often misunderstood and rarely allowed the space for healing. Kim's decision to prioritize her well-being and family is an act of courage. Hghlighting self-care in a world that demands so much from us. Her move is a powerful statement on the importance of personal health and familial love over relentless professional pursuit. Be inspired from Kim’s example. Remembering to care of ourselves, support each other, recognizing our strength lies not only in our achievements but in our ability to prioritize our well-being amidst challenges. Kim Godwin’s legacy reminds us that true leadership includes knowing when to step back and embrace the love and care we deserve.

This election cycle has been rough, especially for most Black women once Vice President Kamala Harris became the nominee. The misogynoir and all the other Black women at work experiences that reminded us of some of the things we experience in our workplaces. There are folks wondering how did we get here as a country because supposedly the election of President Barack Obama meant that we were in a "post-racial" society. ABC Debate Whistleblower Affidavit: 1. Harris was provided sample questions similar to debate questions. 2. Harris was guaranteed Trump would be fact checked in real time and she would not face similar scrutiny. 3. Harris demands exclusion of specific questions: a. Her record as CA AG, b. Her brother in law facing embezzlement charges, who might receive Harris Administration position, c. No questions regarding her knowledge about Biden’s health. 4. Harris campaign had unilateral negotiations with ABC, excluding Trump campaign. 5. Transcripts of secret recordings were attached to affidavit. 6. Six pages of affidavit are included in this post. Affidavit was signed day before debate and sent to House Speaker Johnson. Signator of affidavit expresses culture within ABC included employees advocating for fair debate. In the wake of Vice President Kamala Harris's ascension as the presumptive nominee for the Democratic Party, the Howard University Initiative on Public Opinion conducted a poll on the opinions of Black voters July 22-24 in relation to Harris's candidacy. The report includes results from more than 2000 respondents from more than 30 states, weighted by gender and education level. Results suggest that Harris is best known for her advocacy for reproductive rights, that her best path to victory is to select a white male running mate, and that respondents view her as a politically moderate Democrat. The poll results also show that 93% of those polled plan to vote for VP Kamala Harris. https://lnkd.in/e_S57qf7

WE ALL can cultivate environments where black and brown talent can thrive. We have to first acknowledge how we consciously or subconsciously have been conditioned. We have a long way to go that requires significant progress by leadership. Want proof? Just look around your own senior leadership tables or boards. We can’t get complacent.

A Haitian immigrant story counters the foolishness, and leaders' careless rhetoric: Behold Captain Alix Idrache, a US Army helicopter pilot, who graduated at the top of his 2016 West Point class with a degree in physics. Captain Idrache was born in Haiti. He defies the stereotype. And his story is a reminder for leaders, to elevate and unite. Not divide and dehumanize. Nor mislead. We've all heard the ludicrous claims advanced in Springfield Ohio by the vice presidential running mate on the GOP ticket. Claims that can stoke fear and hatred. And that's caused some Ohio employers to speak out in defense of the values and work ethic of their Haitian immigrant employees. Any leader choosing to distort reality for personal or political gain sows mistrust, eroding the very foundations of a just society. And should interrogate their immigrant prejudice. President Joseph R. Biden will not seek re-election. That's that on that. Now - what, to a Black woman, is an endorsement? At its worst, it is an overly sympathetic gesture that feels, amidst the throes of the moment, necessary. Necessary, not to be confused with a social-political urgency of rightness and righteousness; but necessary in the trope of 'what other choice do we have?' At its holiest, it is a yielding to what could be / an aesthetic of possibility / a making of visibility / or even, a ritual of hope. As a function, to be endorsed is being seen by what bell hooks calls a, "white supremacist capitalist patriarchy." Risking the obvious, it is a mark that she has been deemed 'worthy' by a power bigger than us all - a power that we all breathe and exist within, a smog of sorts that's inescapable: permission. By one instagram post, she has achieved its marking: permission granted. And yet, this permission for her [Vice President Kamala Devi Harris] to be seen invites broader, more human(e) questions emerging in my thoughts as a sort of backgrounded static: will an endorsement yield her safety? why does this sentiment of stamping her worthy yield a liminality between joy and sorrow? and more pressingly, can this space between jubilation [for a Black woman's possibilities] and grief [for a Black woman's possibilities] be generative – can it cultivate a willingness to believe again? Whatever these questions yield, one truth I hold to is that: before this moment, before this endorsement - we saw her, and we knew that she was worthy. Worthy to be president? The people will decide that. But, worthy to be seen? Absolutely. Black folx, namely Black women, have had to wait [behind the curtains] for visibility while practicing public humility as a mode of resistance to and against violence. Now, we must rethink Black humility. because, for her to secure the nomination and win in the name of protecting democracy [an act oft relegated to and reserved for Black women] - she must see this endorsement as a pathway to see herself, and tell her story, in the fullness of her own possibilities. So - what, to a Black woman, is an endorsement? Whatever she wants it to be.
