Just a concept.
We are floating around some ideas about our pocket park. Restoring greenery to the area will be a big part.
Over the past 2 decades, the neighborhood has lost so much in terms of green space. Along Summit Street, behind the park, there was a ball diamond, bike trail, acres of trees. Gone now. Houses and buildings gone, just flat land that serves little purpose but has intense potential. From providing fresh vegetables to providing education on how to grow to beautiful colors of flowers. This small idea can have an impact.
Obviously, there is a lot to be done. There is a decent size divet on one side that would need to be leveled out a bit. There demolition debris in spots. 3 of the current trees planted are completely dead. The sidewalk needs minor repairs. Ultimately we have to communicate with the surrounding neighbors to even see if they want something like this. The Land Bank is letting us adopt the lot, not giving us the deed or anything, so we have to be mindful of whatever we put here can be quickly taken away with short notice.
I have reached out Republic services about trash cans and collection. Unfortunately I've hit a roadblock.
But I am optimistic and enthusiastic about this idea. We have already had a number of people reach out to offer guidance and assistance. A representative from the city wants to help and showcase the idea to other neighborhoods.
The main reason to even consider an idea like this is simple. We've outgrown our clean up events. We don't collect as many tires as in years past, large debris is scattered, dumping spots don't pop up as often and we don't get as many volunteers as before.

Well done to the operations team for lending a hand in such a worthwhile refurbishment.
