One of the key areas of focus of the Enabling Water Smart Communities programme is stewardship. Working with key partners including United Utilities, Community Land Trust Network (CLTN), Arup and the CLES - Centre for Local Economic Strategies, we're developing approaches for community-based stewardship of water assets such as sustainable drainage systems. One of those partners, The Community Land Trust Network, a national charity and membership body for Community Land Trusts (CLTs) in England and Wales, has recently produced a fascinating article for EWSC, as a contribution to the ongoing development of thinking around community-led stewardship of water assets. I just woke up to the strangest image of Mark from Regen Canberra standing in the crown of a Red Oak tree on their farm site in Lake Burley Griffin, with the thought in mind of that tree, Regen Canberra, actually being a Community Land Trust (CLT) as the keeper of that land, stewarded by the people The land is government-owned, so what better structure could there be to start approaching the government for crown land parcels? On top of that, there is the uPPP grant that would help us fund development work of suitable land parcels in the region All this was triggered by our Regen Places Network weekly meeting, where Mark was the project lead in one of the breakout rooms We were first chartering from the bioregion in reference to its unique contribution to the watershed, and then from his farm project to the bioregion, looking for the thread of its unique essence and contribution to the nested wholes This is where Mark started touching on the importance of governance and the framework for people to coordinate and work together on shared goals around their work. This was the point I introduced CLT’s as a structure to develop community-owned and led land-based assets, including housing, farms, and infrastructure "At the core of every community is the pursuit of well-being, stability, and a sense of belonging. Community Land Trusts (CLTs) are non-profit organizations that help cultivate environments where these values can flourish, holding land for the collective benefit of a place-based community. Since being in post, it's been a priority as a Department to work closely with our Planning Committee Members, who are all committed to making sound decisions. We've actively looked to support them, provide learning opportunities, and be accessible to discuss anything planning. We have been candid about the implications of housing land supply, the clear 'direction of travel' from Government, and provided analysis and findings from Appeal decisions in District and further afield. We have in particular explored 'what's the harm' and planning balance weighting. Here's the result of those efforts when presented with a quality, albeit challenging proposal (in terms of its scale vs size of host settlement combined with a unique contextual situation). Members recognised the careful response to context, locational sustainability, and comprehensive set of wider community gains the development will deliver in their supporting of the Officer recommendation. #developmentmanagement #lpa #planningcommittee #housing #housinglandsupply

In October, #TeamDefinity volunteers helped plant 30 trees in Laurentian Park, Kitchener in partnership with Reep Green Solutions, Green Communities Canada, and the City of Kitchener to increase access to greenspace. The Community Canopy project aims to increase the tree canopy in Kitchener neighbourhoods where residents need them most. This year alone, the project aims to plant over 100 new trees in neighbourhoods where tree canopy was identified as below the city’s average. To continue supporting projects of this nature, we're proud to announce $500,000 in continued momentum towards Green Communities Canada’s Living Cities Canada Fund. This investment will support green infrastructure work, planting projects, and opportunities for Definity employees, customers, and brokers to volunteer in their communities. 🌿 New Community Green Spaces Fund Launches 🌿 The Government has unveiled a new £7 million Community Green Spaces Fund aimed at revitalising rural areas across England. Grants of up to £75,000 will be available for community projects from Northumberland to Cornwall. Imagine the difference this could make: community orchards bursting with fruit, kitchen gardens brimming with veggies, improved green spaces attracting pollinators and vibrant natural play areas for our kids to enjoy. There will also be a strong focus on accessibility, with funding allocated for paths, seating, and parking spaces. An additional £5 million is dedicated to modernising village halls and enhancing connectivity within these community keystones. Robbie Moore MP, Minister for Rural Affairs, emphasises that this fund is a step towards integrating the needs of rural people and businesses into the heart of policymaking. It’s an action-packed plan with improved transport, digital access, and a boost to the rural economy, all while safeguarding the unique character of these areas. Richard Quallington of ACRE welcomes the move, highlighting the fund's alignment with environmental and community health goals. This initiative is part of the government’s pledge to ensure no one is more than a 15-minute walk from greenery, aligning with the goals set out in the Environment Improvement Plan. For local government officers, town councils, and neighbourhood developers, this is an opportunity for growth and to promote sustainable communities. This month Property Krowd polled 325 social housing residents in London for the presence of housing disrepair issues. 682 issues were reported across 209 properties. That's an average of 3.3 issues per property! 84% of these properties and their residents qualify for Ofgem ECO4 Grant Funding and have yet to be addressed with their available funding! 😱 🏘 Social housing providers must seek quick impactful wins to ensure the comfort and sustainability of their residents is not compromised due to the lack of internal funding and resource. Initiatives like ECO4 mean that qualifying residents have access to the available solutions that reduce the cost of living and improve their health and well being. At no cost to the landlord. 🌿 Environmentally we all have a huge mountain to climb and we must take the residents with us. We are thrilled to announce that Ms Ruchi Bhatia, Executive Director of Energy & Sustainability at Meinhardt SUIT (Smart and Sustainable Urban Infrastructure Transformation), was extensively quoted in a feature article, “Sky-high Demolitions: What is Behind Singapore’s Many Skyscraper Tear-downs”, which was published in The Straits Times on 9 November 2024. Read the full article in The Straits Times: https://lnkd.in/g-2k_ZZn In this in-depth article, Ruchi shared her insights into the critical environmental and socio-economic considerations influencing Singapore’s urban redevelopment approach, especially concerning its implications for sustainability. Her perspective adds a crucial dimension to the ongoing conversation about how Singapore’s limited land availability and pressing developmental needs influence the decisions between re-development versus adaptive re-use in the context of environmental preservation and the Embodied Carbon. “The climate stakes are not insignificant, considering how the built environment is currently responsible for 39 percent of global energy-related carbon emissions. While operational carbon accounts for nearly 70 percent of a building’s carbon emissions, embodied carbon accounts for 30 percent. However, research has shown that if buildings have a shorter lifespan due to constant urban redevelopment, the embodied carbon emissions could account for up to 40 percent of a building’s total emissions,” she noted in the article. These insights identify the environmental costs of demolishing and rebuilding structures before their lifespan is fully utilised. Reflecting on Singapore’s unique urban landscape, Ruchi emphasises the need for a balanced approach that aligns sustainability with the urban density. Singapore, as a land-scarce nation, is progressively shifting towards high-density, mixed-use developments, aimed at reducing commuting times and enhancing the live-work-play environment in tandem with controls on carbon footprint. Her perspective underscores the importance of the thoughtful and well-calibrated redevelopment approach that Singapore is adopting. She further explained how the lifecycle of a building influences the total environmental impact, noting that “The carbon footprint of these redevelopments and construction projects should therefore not be seen in isolation, but should also consider the socio-economic benefits of these renewed development models.” In discussing alternatives to demolition, Ruchi emphasises the value of adaptive reuse or retrofitting older buildings where feasible. This approach can sometimes provide a balance between environmental responsibility and economic practicality. Energy-efficient buildings are essential to creating sustainable, low-carbon cities that can help address the growing energy demand and conserve our limited resources. If repurposing existing structures isn't feasible to meet evolving needs, reconstruction should be viewed as an opportunity to reduce carbon emissions and energy consumption through the adoption of advanced technologies and green building practices. Singapore's #GreenPlan and #GreenMark standards set ambitious energy efficiency goals for both retrofitting and new construction. It is crucial that we meet these targets, especially for the new buildings shaping our urban skylines. These discussions are an important step forward in advancing our #greeninitiative and fostering common ground.
