For all the companies involved or interested in laser processes of materials, I would like to highlight a couple of events which will happen in June related with this topic. ➡ First one is the 25th International Symposium on Laser Precision Microfabrication LPM2024, next June 11th to 14th in San Sebastián (Spain). It is the main conference on laser microfabrication, organized by the EPIC Member Ceit Research Center, and the scope is to discuss with the industrial and scientific community about different laser processes, photochemistry, new sources and components, process monitoring, beam shaping... PULSATE was born as a PAN European Network to promote and facilitate the adoption of laser-based advanced and additive manufacturing technologies. During the last four years, PULSATE partners have been helping companies from different industries (automotive, aerospace, medical, industrial machinery, textile...) to evaluate the benefits of laser processes in their applications, to develop new sources or components, to implement process monitoring techniques and to develop software solutions to support and/or facilitate the use those laser techniques. This Laser Innovations Summit is a two-day event to discuss about the latest advancements in laser manufacturing technology with different industry leaders, researchers, and business professionals. Earlier this year, we proudly joined the ambitious FLASH - Flexible Laser-based manufacturing through precision photon distribution project, supported by Horizon Europe, the EU’s funding program for research and innovation. Last week, our R&D Engineer, Jonathan Wood, met with project partners in Lisbon for the General Assembly meeting to share progress and plan the next steps. 💡 Part of Synova’s role in the project focuses on integrating three distinct laser sources with a specially designed laser coupling unit. Building on our proven dual-laser integration standard, this module is being adapted to incorporate a third laser beam. CEITEC scientists secure prestigious EIC Pathfinder grant 🎯 The High-Performance Materials and Coatings for Industry (HPMC4I) research group at CEITEC - Central European Institute of Technology Brno University of Technology (Vysoké učení technické v Brně) has been awarded a prestigious grant under the EIC Pathfinder Open program. This European program is focused on supporting research and innovation in new technologies and approaches that can have a significant impact on the market and society. Out of 1,110 project proposals, the commission selected only 45, making the overall success rate just 4 % 🚀 Within the grant, Edgar B. Montufar will lead the ambitious international project BiCeps as the only Czech coordinator, aiming to create a new type of actuator through additive manufacturing that mimics natural muscle movement 💪⚙️ “Motors and drive systems are everywhere, as is additive manufacturing. 🌍 Excited to present my latest work at MicroTAS 2024 in Montreal, Canada! Our paper, titled: "Smooth Surface Fused Silica Microchannel by CNC Milling Fabrication," highlights an innovative approach to fabricating microchannels with smooth surfaces on fused silica using CNC milling techniques. This method offers significant potential for improving the performance and reliability of microfluidic systems, particularly in applications requiring high precision and durability. A heartfelt thank you to my amazing collaborators, Chihchen Chen, Takahiko Kitamori, and Keita Morikawa, for their insights and contributions throughout this project. :New publication: 1️⃣ Processing copper powders using additive manufacturing and especially with powder bed fusion (PBF-LB) techniques poses certain challenges. 2️⃣ The high reflectivity of copper powder results into significant energy losses. 3️⃣ One possible option would be to use treated copper powders which have relatively reduced reflectivity index and better laser power absorption. 4️⃣ Such powders can be used with relatively low power laser systems, which translates into energy savings. 5️⃣ Our new publication tries to put a light on this approach. We are considering copper-tungsten system as a possible solution. 6️⃣ The application areas for such powders, manufactured using additive manufacturing can vary widely; Electronic components, automobile parts, medical devices and many more. This work was not possible without the hardwork and dedication shown by my colleague Simon Rauh. Special thanks to Fraunhofer UMSICHT , for providing the opportunity to work on this topic.
