🎉 Excited to share that our paper has been published in Molecular Metabolism! During my time as a research assistant at the Sabatini lab, I had the privilege to contribute to this groundbreaking research exploring Growth Differentiation Factor 15 (GDF15) and its receptor, GDNF Family Receptor Alpha-like (GFRAL). The findings provide key insights into the specificity of GDF15, and GFRAL-based therapies currently being developed for cancer cachexia. This work marks an important step in understanding the therapeutic potential of GDF15/GFRAL pathways, and I am thrilled to have been part of this incredible team. The Solid-State Characterization group at Alcami Corporation boasts the capability to craft and implement crystal-form screening processes, alongside thorough analysis of new API configurations. Their expertise was recently showcased in a study that unveiled a novel chiral version of the well-known medication, guaifenesin. This work involved extensive identification, detailed examination, and quantification efforts, culminating in a publication within “Crystal Growth and Design,” under the title: “Discovery, Characterization, and Solid-State Quantification of the Racemic Compound of Guaifenesin.” Kudos to Joanna Bis, Briana Graves, Frank Tarczynski, and Lukasz Wojtas for their contribution to this significant research! First Official Project Meeting at Rīgas Tehniskā universitāte (Riga Technical University). An exciting milestone in the project’s journey! This ambitious consolidation initiative has united four distinct working groups and laboratories, all driven by a common goal: to unveil an innovative technology for the extraction of chitin and the production of chitosan from everyday edible mushrooms. Interesting Fact: The mushrooms we frequently enjoy on our plates—such as Agaricus bisporus—hold untapped potential for advanced biomedical applications. Project Title: Freeze-Dried Chitosan Extract from Agaricus bisporus for Burn and Wound Care (FCEA-BW)—a hypoallergenic solution designed to promote effective skin regeneration and provide cutting-edge care for burns and wounds.

Well-characterised, selective small molecules are essential for understanding the cellular functions of proteins and validating them as drug targets. Conversely, the use of poorly evaluated molecules or the biased interpretation of data generated with promiscuous substances leads to pollution of the literature with unsubstantiated claims. The ELRIG Drug Discovery in Germany forum will focus on data quality generated with small molecules and present best practices and guidelines for the use, availability and characterisation of these tools using state-of-the-art methods. We will highlight examples with both traditional inhibitors and novel chemical modalities, such as PROTACs. The meeting will bring together approaches from industry and academia, working together to improve the reproducibility and robustness of scientific data, thereby advancing target validation and our understanding of target biology. #ACHEMA24 #ELRIG
