'When climate communication works (and when it doesn't)'… I am trying to upskill by learning from climate communicators who run campaigns for "the public". Perhaps the hardest audience to have - because there's such a diversity of background, experience, opinion and affiliation. Last week's web session from Internarratives was informative. Watch it if you work in change! https://lnkd.in/er3xJMyM Otherwise, here are some snippets from Alex Randall, Suzanne Dhaliwal, Russell Warfield and Adam Corner: 🔸 Engage by talking to people about things they think about regularly and via concepts they are comfortable with (example was the brilliant 'cheating offset' stunt Cheat Neutral https://lnkd.in/etN8cq34) 🔹 Don't underestimate the power of making something EXCITING, for all audiences (eg 'investors' are humans too and have a limited attention span and want to engage with something cool…) 🔸 Collaborate to localise your campaigns authentically 🔹 Often the public is much more 'won over' than we assume; evidence shows they are convinced by many climate movements' messages… The minority is given airtime by parts of the media (because agreement isn’t a headline) and therefore can seem larger than it is; this creates an assumption that people are more opposed to climate measures than they are! (eg Research on offshore windfarms) 🔸 Often, opposition is highest right before change happens - but then support grows after the change is made. Eg with London's ULEZ: a year after the expansion was implemented, support was overwhelming. This is important for those of us working to help policymakers make 'tough' decisions. "They often have more latitude to act than they think." 🔹 The importance of "unstrategic" communication: creative practice like art, conversation - creating connection and emotion.... 🔸 The work to be done on popularising different types of economic mindset/lifestyle with the general public - as a way of countering the 'demand stimulation' that's everywhere. "There's more energy being put into imagining the end of the world [disaster movies] than imagining different forms of economy…" "What's the 'destination'? And how do we show the wider public that it will be better, healthier, kinder, fairer?"

In our next Energy and Climate Seminar, Paul Tobin is talking about ‘polycentric’ climate governance (PCG). This is a concept academics came up with, to refer to a special kind of complex, multi-layered governance structure that involves multiple actors at multiple levels. Paul's talk starts to explore what this looks like in practice. More particularly, Paul's interested in whether and how this theoretical device can actually aid real life climate action. Please do join us to hear more! More info here: https://lnkd.in/d_kMKy-D #climategovernance #energypolicy #policyresearch
