𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗭𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗮 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 🌾 For farmers in Zambia, connecting to local markets is not just about business—it’s about sustaining livelihoods and saving lives. In the face of a devastating drought, Action Against Hunger Zambia is stepping up to support farmers with climate-resilient farming techniques, ensuring they can weather the storms and thrive. One example is Sitwala, a local farmer who, through training and support from Action Against Hunger, learned sustainable farming methods that helped him grow and sell his produce even in challenging conditions. By linking him with local buyers, we helped him boost his business, ensuring his future and supporting his community. Our approach involves more than just farming; it’s about building resilience, creating markets, and securing livelihoods in the face of climate challenges. 💡 Together, we can build more resilient food systems and support smallholder farmers across the globe. Every day, farmers across Nigeria wake up with hope, only to be met with the harsh realities of climate change. Unpredictable floods and erratic weather threaten their crops and livelihoods. In 2022, the agriculture sector lost over ₦700 billion due to these challenges. By 2024, floods have displaced over 250,000 people in Northern Nigeria and affected 31.8 million Nigerians, contributing to a growing food crisis. Heabron is dedicated to empowering farmers with climate-resilient tools, financing, and market access to build a resilient agricultural system that ensures food security. We seek partners to expand these efforts, helping farmers adapt and thrive in the face of climate challenges. Together, we can secure a sustainable future for millions. #SmallholderFarmers #ClimateAction #SustainableAgriculture #FoodSecurity #Farmers #Agritech #ClimateResilience #FloodImpact

We recently read this article by Somini Sengupta and Manuela Andreoni published on the The New York Times and titled “𝐃𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐏𝐮𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐬 𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐨 ‘𝐀𝐜𝐮𝐭𝐞 𝐇𝐮𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫’ 𝐢𝐧 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚”. 💡 Millions in southern Africa face acute hunger due to one of the worst droughts in over 40 years, destroying crops and livestock. Late and insufficient rains have devastated agrarian regions, leaving communities in desperate need. 🌽 As conflicts increase and currencies devaluate, those reliant on imported food crops are unable to acquire such objects due to rising food prices. 💱 Experts stress the urgent need for resilience-building measures to mitigate future shocks, emphasizing early warning systems and diversification of crops. This article is especially relevant to us at Little Big Fund due to our support of the situation in south African countries through our Believers’ work. Especially relevant is Jacqueline and her work on hunger issues and starvation with orphans in Malawi. 🌍 𝐖𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 Rotary Club of Ojai, 𝐰𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐉𝐚𝐜𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚 𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐫𝐨 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 $𝟔𝟓𝟎 𝐔𝐒𝐃 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦, 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐁𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐁𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬, 𝐬𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐚 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐞-𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝟏𝟎 𝐨𝐫𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐰𝐢. 🧒 We are very proud of all our Believers’ work. 🌼 We also remain aware of and concerned over devastating social issues, and we continue to help those willing and able to engage in small actions that positively impact society. ⭐ Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gzDyMvYA #littlebigfund #littlebigchange #socialimpact #socialchange #entrepreneurship #socialentrepreneurship #socialventure #ngo #nonprofit #southernafrica #elniño #nyt #leadership #socialimpactleaders #enterprise #malawi

🌍 **The Impact of Drought in Zambia: Challenges and Solutions** 🌍 Zambia is facing severe drought conditions, and the effects are far-reaching, impacting millions of lives. 🔹 **Agricultural Decline**: With over 60% of the population relying on agriculture, drought severely affects crop yields, leading to food insecurity and economic hardship. 🔹 **Water Scarcity**: Reduced rainfall means less water for drinking, sanitation, and irrigation, exacerbating health issues and limiting agricultural productivity. 🔹 **Livelihood Loss**: As crops fail and livestock perish, families lose their primary source of income, pushing them deeper into poverty. 🔹 **Health Risks**: Malnutrition rates rise as food becomes scarce, and waterborne diseases spread due to the scarcity of clean water. **Possible Solutions:** 1. **Sustainable Agriculture**: Implementing drought-resistant crops and efficient irrigation systems can help sustain agricultural productivity. 2. **Water Management**: Developing infrastructure for rainwater harvesting and improved water storage can mitigate water scarcity. 3. **Community Resilience**: Empowering communities through education and resources to adapt to changing climate conditions. 4. **Policy Support**: Government and NGO collaboration to create policies that support sustainable development and provide relief to affected communities. Addressing the drought in Zambia requires a comprehensive approach, integrating immediate relief with long-term sustainable solutions. By working together, we can build resilience and secure a better future for all. How can we support sustainable practices to combat the effects of drought? Facing persistent drought, farmers are adopting innovative strategies to weather these challenges. The power of social and behavior change (#SBC) is evident in the success story of this determined farmer who transformed adversity into opportunity. #SBCatFHI360 #FHI360
#Zimbabwe is currently experiencing an El Niño-induced severe drought, which is affecting agricultural livelihoods and threatening #foodsecurity. Consequently, earlier this month the President declared a national disaster. It is in contexts like these that adoption of climate-smart agricultural practices is vital in supporting the resilience of farmers and the ability of vulnerable communities to weather persistent shocks. This is why I’m proud of the work FHI 360 is contributing to under the CARE Zimbabwe-led USAID/BHA-funded Takunda - meaning “we have overcome” in Shona - project here in Zimbabwe. Through the design and implementation of multisectoral social and behavior change (#SBC) activities, we are promoting the adoption of climate-smart practices and technologies and shifting social and gender norms that are crucial for #resilience. This is having very real impacts on farmers like Rosemary. As a result of her engagement with USAID Takunda, Rosemary is now using contour ridges and mulching to conserve soil moisture, a practice she credits as boosting her harvest prospects this season compared to other farmers in her area. #SBCatFHI360 #climate #drought #foodsecurity

This year’s El Niño effect has made its impact felt in countries like Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana, Malawi and Tanzania, while farmers in South Africa have had the best, and worst, of both worlds (too much or too little rain). Early in March Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema declared the country’s debilitating drought a national disaster and emergency. He said the drought devastated food production and electricity generation. A month later President Lazarus Chakwera of Malawi followed suit and declared a state of disaster in 23 of its 28 districts. President Chakwera said Malawi urgently needs more than USD200-million in humanitarian assistance. According to President Hichilema, 84 of Zambia’s 116 districts are affected by the prolonged drought. Zambia has also been battling to recover from a deadly cholera outbreak. Neighbouring Zimbabwe has shared a similar fate, and while reports of cholera persist, Zimbabwe is also facing a glaring food shortage as crops across the country fail because of extreme drought conditions. Certain areas in Tanzania, Mozambique and Malawi have been dealing with periodic, intense drought, followed by extreme rainfall, which has made a severe impact on production, especially for tobacco farmers in Tanzania. #whyafrica #africa #agriculture #farming #africanfarming #farminginafrica #whyfarmafrica #maize #zambia #zimbabwe #malawi #southafrica #tanzania #mozambique https://lnkd.in/dMfA4skr
