À la découverte du patrimoine d’Odanak avec les fellows d’Action Canada 🌿 Notre parcours à Odanak a commencé au Café Masko, où nous avons dégusté un repas traditionnel avec La Sagamité Watso, une soupe issue du patrimoine culinaire des Abénakis. Nous avons ensuite visité le Musée des Abénakis, pour découvrir l’histoire, les traditions et l’art de la communauté. We were joined by Michel, a Knowledge Keeper, and Suzie O'Bomsawin , Assistant General Director of the Abenaki Council of Odanak. They guided us through a tour of the community and shared on the Abenaki journey from their settlement in Odanak and Wôlinak to the loss of their lands over time. The discussion also covered the impacts of resource development on Abenaki territory and projects that contribute to strengthening the community.

Yesterday, May 5, was African World Heritage Day, designated by UNESCO to give greater visibility to a lesser-known heritage. In fact, of the 1,199 sites in the world listed as Unesco World Heritage Sites, only 148 are in Africa. Interviewed by Le Monde on the uniqueness of African heritage, Lazare Eloundou, head of Unesco's World Heritage Center, believes that African heritage should not be seen through the prism of Western societies. For him, what counts is the significance of the place, its social use, its symbolic power in terms of beliefs and traditions. At the Lab, we believe that the various historical sites of the slave trade should be listed and protected as World Heritage Sites, as they are the guardians of a history that continues to influence the world we live in today. This is particularly true of Loango Bay, which we recently mentioned here, a historic site of the transatlantic slave trade that is threatened by coastal erosion. Located near Pointe Noire in the Republic of Congo, Loango Bay served as a port for the Portuguese, Dutch, British and French to ship enslaved people between the 16th and 19th centuries. With no real protection, Loango Bay is sinking into the sea year after year, taking with it the traces of an important site of remembrance of the transatlantic slave trade. 𝐁𝐞𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 – 𝐕𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐝𝐮 𝐏𝐂𝐈 /𝐏𝐂𝐍 Le projet « Beyond the Beach » Beyond The Beach - Patrimoine Vivant de Marie-Galante (patrimoinevivantmgte.com) encourage l'engagement et l'inclusion professionnelle de la jeunesse rurale et insulaire à travers la préservation du Patrimoine Culturel Immatériel et Naturel ‘PCI /PCN). Le projet regroupe trois organisations - Patrimoine vivant de Marie Galante, Emanciper Mayotte 976 et Solidarity Tracks) de trois îles différentes ayant pour but de partager des bonnes pratiques d’ activités alternatives au tourisme balnéaire et d’encourager les activités économiques génératrices de revenus relevant de l ’éco-tourisme auprès des jeunes - touchés par un fort taux de chômage - afin de les sensibiliser aux opportunités professionnelles qu’ils peuvent saisir au sein de leur communauté. L’objectif sous jacent est de limiter l’exode rural des jeunes et contribuer au développement local des territoires ruraux et insulaires via la valorisation du PCI et PCN. Quatre types d'activités ont été développées dans le cadre du projet : 1) L’organisation de visites d’étude sur chaque île partenaire afin de partager les mesures mises en place dans chacun des lieux, 2) La création d’une carte répertoriant les bonnes pratiques à la fin des visites d’étude, 3) La publication d’un podcast de storytelling sur l'écotourisme afin de recueillir les témoignages de ceux qui en ont fait leur métier, 4) La préparation d’activités locales et transnationales afin de donner plus de visibilité aux initiatives existantes.
