Life as a PhD student at ISTA is an exciting journey! Hi, I am Caterina Giannini, a PhD student in the Friml and Loose groups, where I am investigating how the plant hormone auxin directs so many aspects of plant growth, combining new approaches from molecular biology and biochemistry. I chose ISTA... Because the support of international colleagues enriches day-to-day lab work with diverse points of view, ideas, and expertise. Because my main motivation during these years is to pursue and explore my curiosity both in and outside the lab. Because of the many social activities offered here. The dance groups on campus, particularly the Argentine Tango group, have enabled me to restart my dance journey while pursuing my PhD. It allows me to find inspiration and refine my problem-solving skills! Because of the state-of-the-art facilities on our campus—such as the microscopy park, plant facility, and protein service—I have been able to satisfy my curiosity and explore new experiments with expert support, making any innovative endeavor possible. Because ISTA's interdisciplinary approach has shown me that communication is key to discovering and exploring new research questions. Joining ISTA has been a great decision for me, not only professionally but also personally. 🚀 Thesis DEFENDED: Mission Accomplished! 🚀 I’m thrilled to announce that I’ve officially defended my MS thesis on enzyme production (because who doesn’t love a little protease magic?). 🧪💪 From pH adjustment to colony spreading, slant prep, enzyme purification, and optimization — I’ve become the “jack of all lab trades” 🧫🔬 (and I’ve got the pipette calluses to prove it)! Alongside mastering some serious lab techniques, I also leveled up in soft skills like problem-solving (aka “what happened to my cultures??”), teamwork, and communication.
