We loved the sentiment of Andrea Dobson, from Enva, who used her time on stage at the RDF Conference last month to give the industry’s smaller waste handlers a voice. She highlighted how they’re more vulnerable to legislative change and said, “New entrepreneurial ideas need to be encouraged.” We second that message! If you’re a waste handler ready to get ahead of legislative change and innovate, you can find out more here ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/eDJDNSkm #RDFConference #Biotechnology

♻️ PROSPER at the European Bioplastics #EBC24 Side Event! 🌍 We were thrilled to join the event alongside BioSupPack, BIOMAC, MoeBIOS, and ReBioCycle. These projects share a common goal: keeping bioplastics in the circular loop for as long as possible. Our project was presented by Wouter Post from Wageningen Food & Biobased Research, highlighting how PROSPER aims to demonstrate technically and financially viable sorting and recycling solutions for biobased plastics in packaging. 🔗 Learn more about the projects here: https://lnkd.in/eprEis6D 📊 Explore the event presentations: https://lnkd.in/dg6cPqUE This project is co-funded by the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) under the Horizon Europe program and the Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC). #CircularEconomy #Bioplastics #RecyclingInnovation #HorizonEurope #Sustainability

Reinventing the Means of Production for a Sustainable Future 🌍 At SynBioBeta 2024, our Climate Tech panel addressed the need to rethink not just energy but food systems, materials, and production methods. From the plastics we use to the concrete in our buildings, petrochemicals dominate. As John Cumbers says, “Biologize everything”—leveraging biology and new materials to make production more efficient and sustainable. Despite challenges in venture funding, investment in sustainability remains strong, reflecting a collective commitment to a greener future. 👉 Watch the full panel discussion here: https://loom.ly/PAqtzPY #SynBioBeta2024 #ClimateTech #Sustainability #Biotech #GreenInnovation

Transforming the Future of Biochar in 2025 At Biochar World, we’re making strides to revolutionize the biochar industry. Our mission is clear: ✅ Introduce sustainable funding to support viable biochar start-ups. ✅ Ensure start-ups have access to the right equipment for optimized production. ✅ Help connect producers to reliable buyers - both for carbon credits and the physical biochar they create. This month, we’re thrilled to launch our upgraded website, designed to serve as a comprehensive hub for funding, equipment guidance, and market access. With over 150 biochar manufacturers already on board, we're creating a thriving ecosystem to amplify the positive impact of biochar on our planet. Let’s make 2025 a pivotal year for biochar innovation and sustainability. #Biochar #Sustainability #Innovation #CarbonRemoval

💩 in 💩 out Not the key finding of my presentation but my favorite one for a headline 😊 Thanks again to German Biochar e.V. (Fachverband Pflanzenkohle e.V.) to also now uploading the presentation of last year's German Biochar Forum. My presentation was uploaded last week: https://lnkd.in/eqPHBkGY I do not like to watch myself, but it's something where I learn the most about how I present and how I can impove here and there. Besides that I want to give some additional information that I find relevant now five months later: 🙈 There is still no public pre-planning guideline for pyrolysis systems to produce regenerative energy and biochar. This is more of a reminder for myself since it is one of the things I want to get started this year. Feel free to contact me. I will also be reaching out on this topic starting this summer. 💩 Shit in - shit out: You can’t produce good quality biochar or run a pyrolysis system when you get feedstock that is either too wet, contains stones, metal, or contains high amounts of chlorine and potassium that reacts to corrosive acids such as Hydrochloric Acid or corrosive salts such as potassium chloride (KCl). 🚘 Besides that, here also the saying counts: “What goes around comes around”: When we use roadside vegetation for pyrolysis, we will have higher concentrations of lead, cadmium, or other fossil fuel-related heavy metals in the biochar. 💲 We need to stay realistic in our business models: There are plenty of fast money-making people out there who work on self-destructive business plans (most of them do not know it yet 🙄). These are often based on just carbon certificates and biochar. STOP that! Projects will be successful when we plan with heat, biochar, and certificates: ▶ We take the following factors as a baseline: ⬛ 300€/t biochar 🔷 150€/t CO2 ➗ Conversion rate C:CO2: 2 - 2,4 (when less, operation emissions are too high) ♨ In Germany: 8€ct/kWh heat 💪 When you have as well skilled people (Easier said than done) who operate the plant, you can scale. 💡 Don’t go too big, plan modular. Projects need to stay within their decentral resource boundaries. Biomass availability, heat demand, and biochar demand are the bottlenecks of all pyrolysis projects. We mostly suggest an iterative planning approach to leave space for some improvements in a second stage scale-up. ❓ You have points to add? Please feel free to add in the comments: #biochar #CDR #BCR #GermanBiochar #Pyccs #negativEmissions #netzero
