📢 The second panel of the AEIP Annual Conference highlighted Strengthening #SocialDialogue in the #Construction Sector. The discussion was introduced by an insightful keynote from Peter Kerckhofs (Eurofound), emphasising the crucial role of Paritarian Institutions in industrial relations. 👷♂️ Social dialogue is essential for a sustainable construction industry, enhancing working conditions, safety, and skill development. The panel underscored the need to maintain social dialogue at the sectoral level to effectively address real industry challenges. The European Commission also outlined new priorities, including the Pact for Social Dialogue, building on the Val Duchesse Declaration to shape future actions. 👏 A special thanks to the exceptional panelists for their valuable contributions to this engaging discussion: Marta Pradanos Gonzalez (DG EMPL C.3, European Commission), Christine Le Forestier (FIEC EU ), Tom Deleu (European Federation of Building and Woodworkers (EFBWW) and Kristof Van Roy (Constructiv). Last but not least, a huge thank you to Thorsten Guthke (SOKA-BAU) for his outstanding moderation.

Industry conferences play an important role in providing a platform for discussion on key matters of the day and an opportunity to network with peers (as well as help fund the good work of industry associations!) Regardless of industry, these events usually follow a traditional formula of speakers and panel discussions with little opportunity for the audience to interact or feel like they are part of the conversation. Attendees can often leave with a feeling of 'well that was interesting but so what?' The Foundations and Frontiers construction forum seeks to address this feedback and will be a gathering like no other! Modelled on the COP and Davos Summits, FF24 aims to bring together stakeholders from right across the construction industry including government and private asset owners, industry, supply chain, unions and academia for a conversation on the pressing issues facing the construction sector. (As we all know, without significant reform, the construction industry will not be able to deliver the projects Australia needs, when it needs them and for a price that it can afford.) Interactive plenary sessions will inform more detailed side discussions, involving key invited decision makers, with findings and further actions summarised at the end of the day. Just like the COP summit the aim is for this to become an annual forum where progress is tracked and frontiers constantly pushed. Is the Construction Playbook still the path to building a better future? Over three years since its introduction, Group Public Sector Director, Stephen Beechey will host a frank panel discussion at UKREiiF next month to uncover the reality of its implementation alongside Sue McElroy, Fergus Harradence and Deborah Downey. The Playbook was designed to establish a series of #ukgovernment standards on how the construction industry should procure and deliver major public sector projects, focusing on collaboration and strategic relationships between the private and public sector. However, concerns have since been raised by industry bodies that its success is limited due to inconsistent application. Join the debate in the 'Wates House' pavilion on 22 May at 9.30am to take a closer look at how the Playbook is being implemented and how it can be used in the future to navigate the challenges of delivering major construction projects. A very interesting discussion on UK's timber supply and how 81% of our timber products are imported. The reduction in demand for using locally grown timber can be prevented and become a topic of discussion in practice between architects and structural engineers to implement C16 graded timber into our projects. Using local materials will have a positive impact on our carbon footprint, but how do we reduce the possible negative effects on our biodiversity if our demand for UK grown timber increases steeply in the next 30 years?
RIAS CPD | Future wood supplies for construction, a focus on the UK Timber resource Thurs 27 June 2024 12:30 - 13:30 | Online https://ow.ly/hmzq50SgYBT Join us for our CPD next Thursday discussing the current and future wood supplies for construction in the UK, the wood resource from UK forests and current and future opportunities for its use in construction. We will be joined by speakers Andy Leitch, Deputy Chief Executive at Confor: Confederation of Forest Industries (UK): and Rob McKenna, General Manager, Lockerbie Sawmill, James Jones & Sons Ltd Please note this event could contribute towards the ARB’s 2024 mandatory requirement for CPD on ‘Environmental Sustainability’.

The industry transition team is growing! It takes a multidisciplinary village to examine all aspects of the sustainable built environment: Finance & Economics Urban Planning Design Engineering BQ Specifications IT/ICT/Digital Technologies Chemistry/Physics/Biology Health Social Inclusion/ESG Legal Contracts Creatives Operations Research Project Management Current construction practices have been used for hundreds of years. We need to shift while learning which is not an easy task. We also need to plan in ways that reduce current problems and prevent future disasters. Decarbonisation is not about shutting down current businesses. Decarbonisation is about redesigning our approach to construction so that we have better health and environmental outcomes. Most of all, Decarbonisation is about improving our business models to make more (long term) money, i.e. find ways to have a steady profit 20 years in the future. What is a carbon and how do you get rid of it? Think about the factory smoke: what if instead of letting it escape into the air and everyone coughing, we can use filters that grab that smoke? what if we take the dirty filters and recapture some key ingredients to use again? what if you can make more construction products with lower electric bills? what if you can use 50% less water? what if transport time to the construction site is only 10 minutes? Cement and Steel have the most smokey processes. Our goal is to keep these materials in production while getting rid of the smokey production problems. New paper on project-based business models in the construction industry published in Construction Management and Economics by CBMI Associate Professor Johan Holtström together with colleagues Sarah S. Kenlind and Tomas Nord. In order to achieve higher levels of sustainability in wood extension building projects, this study aimed to highlight the benefits of adopting a project-based business model approach by studying the technical, economic, social, and environmental attributes associated with timber building extension projects.
