It was wonderful to meet The Hunger Project team in #Zambia and learn about their work across nine African countries, implementing the Epicenter Strategy. This approach empowers communities to achieve sustainable self-reliance by shifting power to small-scale producers and promoting community-led development. During our discussions, we explored potential collaboration in #regenerative #agriculture and Australian farming practices. The Epicenter Strategy guides communities through a five to eight-year journey toward self-reliance. Their core philosophy focuses on three essential areas: • Start with Women: Empowering women as key change agents. • Mobilize Everyone: Building people’s capacities, leadership, and confidence. • Engage Local Government: Forging effective partnerships with local government. On International Women’s Day in 2024, themed “Invest In Women: Accelerate Progress”, we would like to celebrate rural women who play critical roles in global food systems, working as farm managers and paid and unpaid laborers in all aspects of agricultural production, processing, and distribution and a range of other non-farm activities in rural economies. (Doss, Njuki, and Mika 2020; Montalvao and Van de Velde 2020; Njuki 2020) Ensuring global food security requires that rural women are equipped with the tools and resources they need to adapt and thrive in the face of a changing climate. In a working paper, Mercy Corps AgriFin and CGAP identify sustainable and scalable opportunities for #providers, #donors, and #investors to enhance the resilience of rural women. From #digital solutions to tailored financial services, discover how we can support rural women in adapting to climate change and drive positive change in global food systems. #IWD2024 #InvestInWomenAccelerateProgress #WomeninAgritech Read more: https://bit.ly/43ruGhP By: Jamie Anderson, Victoria Clause, Max Mattern & Kassim Z.

Having been part of many projects—some of which #thrived, while others didn’t—I’ve come to realize one essential factor called #sustainabilitystrategy. We’ve seen countless initiatives start with great promise, only to fade away. The reason isn’t that these projects weren’t impactful. Far from it. The challenge lies in their #long-term sustainability. Many social programs fail because there wasn’t a solid #businessmodel in place to keep them running. It’s time for us to go back to the drawing board and rethink how we approach this. We need to start focusing on ways to bring in revenue for the projects we’re building. I know this can be uncomfortable—especially when we’re talking about #social programs where money is often the last thing we want to address. But if we’re serious about creating lasting #change, we must acknowledge the reality that funds are just as important. Of course, external support is always welcome, but we can’t rely solely on others’ #generosity to keep our operations alive. If we truly care about the #communities we serve, we must be proactive in creating strong #financial #pillars for our projects. It’s the only way to ensure they keep running, touching lives, and breaking the cycle of poverty in our communities. I have been committed to building and advocating for #youth and #women in #agriculture, and i am always open to collaborating with #passionate, #driven individuals. Let’s bring those projects to life.
