Conquering Africa through E-mobility The range of electric vehicles (EVs) is no longer the hurdle. Instead, it's the charging network that presents the challenge—how soon will we have charging stations set up within a 250 km radius across the continent? Just recently, Kabisa cruised over 2,328 km from Kigali to Nairobi for the Africa E-mobility Week, charging only five times one way. This showcases the potential of long-distance EV travel across Africa. Electric motorcycles, known for shorter urban trips, are now set to make history. Tomorrow (Sept 29), Stellenbosch University and Roam will embark on a 6,000 km journey on an African-made electric motorcycle. But here’s the game-changer: petrol stations and malls could accelerate Africa’s EV transition. By partnering with charging companies, they can transform their infrastructure into EV charging hubs. Malls could leverage this to attract new customers, as MIT research shows. https://lnkd.in/dGNbHnsy In fact, businesses within a mile of EV chargers have seen a notable increase in customer traffic and spending. A whole ecosystem of new businesses could emerge, turning Africa’s cities into EV hotspots and driving economic growth across sectors. EVs aren’t just about mobility—they’re about creating a thriving sustainable business environment. #EVs #AfricanEvs #charginginfrastructurre #Africaemobilityweek #AEMW2024 #cleanenergy #sustainability #electricvehicles

What if owning an electric vehicle in Africa was as easy as a subscription? New models are making EV ownership more accessible and sustainable. #Electricvehicles (EVs) are changing the game in Africa, with solutions like subscription services, shared ownership, and battery leasing. These models lower costs and offer flexibility, making EVs more affordable for younger generations and gig economy workers. Why does this matter? Subscription services like MAX in Nigeria and SPIRO in Kenya cover maintenance and charging, while platforms like #LÜLA in South Africa offer shared ownership to reduce costs. Companies like Zeno in East Africa are also making electric motorcycles affordable for boda boda drivers with battery leasing. These innovations not only make EVs more accessible but also support local economies and create a greener future for Africa's transportation. There are now 5000 electric vehicles in Kenya and the government has committed to transitioning its fleet to electric. Alex Mwanzo, GM of Equator Mobility, has been at the forefront of Kenya’s EV market from the start. In this blog post, https://lnkd.in/dhbExzGN, Alex takes stock of the Kenyan EV market: "Whenever I talk to friends and customers in Nairobi about Electric Vehicles (EVs), I tend to get asked two questions: - Can it reach Mombasa from Nairobi (485km) on a single charge? - What are my charging options? The short answer to the Mombasa question is no…not yet…but who cares?! Most of us living in Nairobi have predictable routines that rarely involve driving to Mombasa: short commutes to work, lunch, and back home, typically covering less than 100 kilometers per day. This makes EVs ideal for daily use, especially since they spend most of their time parked. Having used an EV full-time for months, I've saved over 85% on fuel and virtually eliminated maintenance costs. I've taken my family on trips to Nanyuki (200km from Nairobi) in my Nissan Leaf, which proved cheaper and more comfortable than public transport. With infrastructure in its infancy, long-distance travel does remain challenging for most models in Kenya and across Africa, but the charging network is growing and with more fast chargers becoming available, full charges in an hour will soon be possible. Sales are increasing and the infrastructure will follow." Maris launched Equator Mobility in 2021 - Kenya’s first provider of fully-electric commercial vehicles and a leasing model that allows businesses to affordably transition their fleets from diesel to electric. #ElectricVehicles #EVKenya #SustainableTransport #GreenEnergy #EVInfrastructure #EquatorMobility #KenyaEVMarket #ElectricFleet #CleanEnergy #FutureOfTransport #ZeroEmissions #EVCharging #KenyaSustainability #ElectricCars #MarisAfrica

The Kenyan e-mobility market has grown and how! Driven by positive government initiatives, private sector participation has increased heavily. More than 40 companies, mostly in the 2W segment, are competing for market share. Consequently, it has been a supply heavy market so far. Moving forward, we may see more ambitious targets, greater capital influx, and stronger policies to meet the insatiable needs of the private sector. The government has almost finalised the e-mobility policy framework for Kenya, laying the foundation for the sector's growth. Therefore, significant market consolidation can be expected. Along with this will come price correction and an enhancement of EV features. The market will embrace the customer as the accelerator of the electric vehicle ecosystem, with policies as the engine and capital as the battery (hopefully with an unlimited range). In my article, published by AFRICA NEWS AGENCY, I analyse the current market environment and provide insights into its future. Give it a read!

Kenya Power is investing in the establishment of electric vehicle charging hubs to promote e-mobility in the country. This initiative aims to enhance the infrastructure needed for electric vehicles and support the government's goal of increasing the adoption of sustainable transport solutions. The charging hubs will be strategically located to provide convenient access for EV users, thereby encouraging more people to switch to electric vehicles. The investment is part of Kenya Power's broader strategy to diversify its energy sources and contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions in the transport sector. By developing a robust network of charging stations, the company hopes to facilitate the growth of the electric vehicle market in Kenya, making it easier for consumers to transition to greener alternatives. #Sustainability #EV #Emobility

Electric Vehicles (EVs) in Africa and Kenya Electric vehicles are still in their early stages across Africa, but Kenya is taking a leading role. Here's a breakdown: Africa: EV adoption is low compared to developed countries. South Africa is currently the frontrunner but with a small market share (less than 0.2% of new car sales in 2020). Kenya: The government is actively promoting EVs through its National Electric Mobility Plan. This plan aims for a greener transportation system and includes initiatives for sustainable traffic management. There are over 1,350 electric vehicles on Kenyan roads, with electric motorcycles leading the way (around 62%). The government offers incentives like reduced excise duty on electric cars to make them more affordable. Kenya is also developing standards for imported EVs to ensure safety and performance. Overall: Kenya is showing promise in EV adoption within Africa. More charging stations are being built to support this growth. Affordability and access to charging infrastructure remain challenges. #going green
