As one of the largest free-trade areas in the world, the AfCFTA has the potential to reshape the economic landscape of the continent by creating a single market for goods and services, facilitating free movement, and fostering greater cooperation among African nations. Furthermore, the successful implementation of the AfCFTA is closely linked to the full ratification of the Free Movement Protocol. The AfCFTA’s goal of creating an economically borderless Africa relies on the effective implementation of the FMP. This study by Mariajose Silva-Vargas, PhD from J-PAL Europe, United Nations University-MERIT and Francesco Loiacono from EBRD explores how to foster #SocialCohesion in #RefugeeHosting countries through inter-group contact in the workplace. Findings from a randomized control trial in #Uganda: 🔄 Explicit bias decreases for both refugee and native workers, while implicit bias increases only for natives. 🤝 Both groups improve their behaviors towards each other: locals are more open to refugee business partners, and refugees seek more employment in Ugandan firms.

As the 5-day National Consultation on Zimbabwe's Diaspora Policy Review concludes today, the Government of Zimbabwe 🇿🇼, the #Diaspora community, and IOM - UN Migration have renewed their commitment to advancing a more coordinated, multi-stakeholder approach to diaspora engagement. This milestone aligns with Zimbabwe’s recent membership in the Global Diaspora Policy Alliance (GDPA), a global platform that unites policymakers, diaspora organizations, international agencies, the private sector, and other key actors to design sustainable diaspora policies for both countries of origin and residence. Empowering Communities Against Irregular Migration: A Successful Training Event in Lagos! 🌍 I'm excited to share my participation in a pivotal training session on June 3rd and 4th, 2024, organized by SOLWODI, GPI, PCI, and ADIS at Dover Hotel, Lagos. This event focused on addressing the pressing issues of irregular migration and promoting legal pathways to Germany. Key Highlights: ✨ Organizers: Girls’ Power Initiative (GPI): Empowering young girls and preventing human trafficking. Parents Citizen Initiatives (PCI): Tackling irregular migration and supporting reintegration. Advocacy for Inclusion and Support Initiative (ADIS): Educating and supporting returning migrants. Solidarity with Women in Distress (SOLWODI): Advocating for migrant women facing violence. Goals and Objectives: 🔍 Addressing the dangers and risks of irregular migration. 🔍 Providing detailed information on legal migration opportunities to Germany. 🔍 Sensitizing participants on the importance of safe migration practices. 🔍 Highlighting economic opportunities within Nigeria to deter irregular migration. Training Insights: 📚 History of Migration: Understanding migration patterns, reasons, and associated risks. 📚 Irregular Migration: Discussing push and pull factors, dangers, and prevention strategies. 📚 Migration to Germany: Navigating asylum procedures and legal migration requirements. 📚 Opportunities in Nigeria: Exploring sectors like agriculture, fashion, and technology for viable livelihoods. 📚 Return Migration and Reintegration: Support systems and processes for returning migrants. 📚 Entrepreneurship: Overcoming challenges and fostering economic growth. I'm excited to share that I've recently concluded facilitating an insightful research validation workshop for the study I and my team led for the International Organization for Migration (IOM) across the six South-South states of Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Rivers, and the FCT. The study aims to gather evidence on human trafficking and its linkage to Labour migration. 🔍 This research is part of the Cooperation on Migration and Partnerships for Sustainable Solutions (COMPASS) Initiative, which aims to protect vulnerable individuals, combat exploitation, and promote sustainable reintegration. COMPASS is implemented across several countries, including Nigeria, Afghanistan, Chad, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Mali, Morocco, Niger, and Tunisia. 🇳🇬 Focus on Nigeria: In Nigeria, the project specifically aims to enhance the capacity of state and non-state actors in states with high return rates. The goal is to provide sustainable reintegration support to returned migrants, especially vulnerable groups. As the lead consultant for this study, I presented the findings to stakeholders, including government actors, civil society organizations, and community leaders from across the six states who gathered in Abuja for the three-day workshop. This participatory approach allowed all stakeholders to thoroughly review the entire 50-page report and provide valuable feedback for revision, which has been duly considered. 📚 I extend my gratitude to the Federal Ministry of Labor and Employment, NACTAL NIGERIA, Migration Resource Center, NATIONAL AGENCY FOR THE PROHIBITION OF TRAFFICKING IN PERSONS (NAPTIP), National Commission for Refugees Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), NATIONAL ORIENTATION AGENCY (NOA), Edo State Government Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons, the Broadcasting Organization of Nigeria, Edo and Delta State Task Forces Against Human Trafficking, the Ministry of Education, the Nigeria Immigration Service, and the Legal Hub for their unwavering support and dedication throughout the research process. Governments around the world are increasingly aware of the importance of diaspora networks to foster sustainable development. The Emergence of Hope in Myanmar Myanmar is in the midst of an even more fundamental transformation. The 1 February 2021 Coup opened up a pandora’s box, and the last six months have brought out the realities of what Min Aung Hlaing has unleashed. But unlike the Greek myth, hope has not been imprisoned within: The State Administrative Council (SAC) has lost control of the country and its population. In the process Myanmar has fragmented into increasingly autonomously governed regions. Any attempt in the foreseeable future to re-establish a centrally governed state is overly optimistic. A new form of governance offering very broad autonomy to the federal units needs to be considered. A new generation of Myanmar citizens has emerged. A young generation, who having tasted the relative freedoms that the opening up in 2011 of the country brought are not ready to give them back. A generation strongly interconnected within the country and connected with the outside world. A generation that has developed a new set of values and habits. This generation has not inherited the fear of authority that has been so engrained into their parents. A new form of governance is being set up in Karenni. Initiated by civil society leaders the attempt is to put in place the structures and systems of an accountable administration at all levels. For the first time in Myanmar’s history, it can be said that the people are being given a voice in shaping the institutions that will administer them. This dynamic seems to be mirrored in many other of the ethnic armed group administered areas. Humanitarian aid until now has been extremely limited with those in need largely relying on locally sourced support. The level of the UN appeals for Myanmar are not justified by the trickle of assistance that is reaching those in areas of greatest need. A new form of intervention needs to be found; one that builds on the solidarity that exists between local governance structures and the people, and that reinforces their commitment to providing assistance to those in need. Some international organisations have already done so. International donors need to be willing to expand the resources of such organisations directly supporting local structures.
