Let's begin the story of African Union ECOSOCC! Before we start the journey, let's look at the foundation: The Awakening (1990s - 2000). Before transitioning from the Organisation of African unity (OAU) to the African Union, the OAU had an ad-hoc relationship with #civilsociety organizations (CSOs). This era saw significant steps towards recognizing CSOs through crucial decisions and charters: 📄1990: Declaration on the political and socio-economic situation in #Africa and the fundamental changes taking place in the world: https://lnkd.in/dKC6kE_4 📄1991: The African Charter for Popular Participation in Development and Transformation: https://lnkd.in/devWNpJw 📄1991: Abuja Treaty establishing the African Economic Community (AEC): https://lnkd.in/dthNTVQh 📄2000: Solemn Declaration on the CSSDCA by the AU Assembly: https://lnkd.in/dxNZ4Fen These milestones set the stage for a more inclusive and people-centered African Union. #ECOSOCC20

The #2024AUBasicIndexReport highlights a significant disparity in African Union treaty ratifications. Leading the Way: Mali, Benin, Burkina Faso, Niger, Rwanda, Togo, Republic of Congo, Cameroon, Ethiopia, and Mozambique demonstrate strong commitment to regional legal frameworks. Lagging: The Central African Republic, Sao Tome and Principe, Sierra Leone, Morocco, Cape Verde, Djibouti, Botswana, Eritrea, Somalia, and South Sudan face challenges in ratifying key AU treaties. What can we learn from the success of leading countries to encourage greater participation? 1️⃣Strong Political Will: High-level political commitment drives treaty ratification processes. 2️⃣Effective Domestication: Clear mechanisms for translating ratified treaties into national law are essential. 3️⃣Capacity Building: Investing in legal and institutional capacity within member states is key. 4️⃣Enhanced Communication & Outreach: Raising awareness and fostering understanding of the benefits of AU treaties among stakeholders. What are your thoughts on the factors hindering treaty ratification in some African countries? How can these challenges be addressed collectively? #AUReform #Accountability #AUSummit2025 #Leadership African Development Bank Group , African Women's Development Fund (AWDF),African Citizen Child Fund (ACCF),Africa CDC, African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (ACCORD),Acerwc Caedbe, GIZ African Union,African Union ECOSOCC,Muneinazvo Kujeke,African Union Development Agency-NEPAD,Lamou Martin KOLIE,Lou Aya DOUABOU,Odero Otieno,Joanna Munengwa 🌍,George Mwanza,Lilian Sospeter,Magdalane Kikuvi, PhD,Hionel F Kavehaha Apollus,Paulin BOUDA,Irene Merveille Ngamy,Nuzaiba Abdula,Yvonne Mpambara

It is intriguing to observe the gap between the ratification of treaties and their actual impact on the ground in some countries.
