🇧🇪 🇧🇷 🌍 Strengthening Economic Ties Through Cooperation Projects 🇧🇷 🇧🇪 🌍 As we anticipate HRH Princess Astrid's economic mission to Brazil in November, it's an opportune moment to highlight the deepening economic connections between Belgium and Brazil, especially through collaborative projects in research, development, and innovation. 🇧🇪🇧🇷 DID YOU KNOW THIS ABOUT THE COOPERATION BETWEEN WALLONIA (BELGIUM) AND BRAZIL? Belgium, particularly the region of Wallonia, is actively engaged in international cooperation projects aimed at fostering industrial innovation. One such initiative is the 34th IraSME Call for international cooperation projects in Research, Development, and Innovation (RD&I), launched by SPWEER and EMBRAPII - Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa e Inovação Industrial. This initiative promotes the development of new products, processes, or technical services between Belgium and Brazil. Brazil's dynamic market is ripe for collaboration, and the upcoming economic mission led by HRH Princess Astrid aims to further solidify the economic ties between Belgium and Brazil. This mission presents an excellent opportunity to explore additional collaborative ventures, investment possibilities, and mutual growth areas between our two nations. To make these cooperation projects effective, AWEx works hand in hand with Julie Dumont, Scientific and Academic Counselor from WBI (Wallonia-Brussels International), who can help you identify the right R&D partners, ensuring a seamless and productive partnership. As we look forward to the economic mission in November, we are excited about the potential for further collaboration and innovation between Belgium and Brazil. Together, we can achieve remarkable growth and advancements in industrial innovation. 🌟🤝 Interested? Setting up this Vanguard Initiative #funding mechanism, in which 11 regions contribute financially to fund collaborative #innovation projects, was already quite a breakthrough achievement. The large interest shown by #industry and #academia for the possibilities offered is a sweet first sign of actual success. So good luck all in submitting your final proposals in few weeks time ! This is promising for the future of #VInnovate, with hopefully additional regions joining and larger budgets available. More news after the next phase.
Last May 2024, the Vanguard Initiative initiative launched #VInnovate, the network’s own interregional funding mechanism in which 11 of its member regions contribute financially to fund collaborative innovation projects designed and proposed by stakeholders based in their regions. We have now concluded an important first phase in this pioneering initiative in interregional innovation collaboration: a total of 114 motivated stakeholders submitted 47 “project descriptions” (“phase 1” proposals), which have been assessed in terms of eligibility. 41 of them have received a positive message and are invited to proceed to the submission of their full project proposal by the end of October. A healthy competition between high-value ideas and proposals in all 8 technology fields of our thematic Pilot Projects is now ongoing. Vanguard Initiative is demonstrating the need for financial support mechanisms for “high TRL (TRL5+)” proposals, designed by industrial and knowledge-based innovation partners across the EU, and enabling cooperation among regions and organizations with advanced capabilities. We look forward to the submission of the full proposals and will keep you updated. #innovation #innovationecosystems #valuechains #I3 An impactful cooperation among EAST NL (EFRO Oost 2021-2027), GALICIA (Axencia Galega de Innovación), EMILIA-ROMAGNA (Regione Emilia-Romagna/ART-ER S. cons. p. a.), FLANDERS (Departement Economie, Wetenschap en Innovatie (EWI), LOWER AUSTRIA (Federal government of Lower Austria), LOWER SAXONY (Ministry of Federal and European Affairs and Regional Development/Investitions- und Förderbank Niedersachsen – NBank), NORTE (CCDR NORTE, I.P.-N), NORTH EAST ROMANIA (North-East Regional Development Agency / Agentia pentru Dezvoltare Regionala Nord-Est), SOUTH NL (Provincie Noord-Brabant/Brainport Development), WALLONIA (Service public de Wallonie), Vanguard Initiative and IDEA Consult.

It's great to see strong support for #EuropeanUniversities alliances in today's high-level report on the interim evaluation of Horizon Europe and the future R&I framework programme. 🤝 In the report, European Universities are recognised as a key tool to foster an #attractive and #inclusive R&I ecosystem in Europe by providing new spaces for deep institutional collaboration of universities and striving for new levels of student and staff #mobility across Europe. 💪 Only 5 years after the launch of the first #EuropeanUniversities alliances, they are seen to have already delivered significant progress and - even more importantly - carry potential for advancing a European higher education and strengthening a common European R&I ecosystem in the future. 👩⚕️ Recommendations for future developments include support for early-career researchers, and a focus on research across all academic disciplines with a strong European added value. This resonates well with Una Europa's Vision on R&I, which puts early-career researchers front and centre with the ambition of creating a supportive environment that empowers individuals to thrive, fostering mobility and exchange of young talents across Europe. In addition, we are working hard to support the evolution of Una Europa’s six collaborative focus areas, into interdisciplinary hubs for research, education and knowledge transfer. 💷 Finally, it's impossible not to mention the clear call for securing sustainable financial support across all university missions to unlock the transformative potential of alliances - of course within a strong and secure overall budget. Now it will be interesting to see how this report will feed into the most recent discussions in Brussels, where big question marks on the future have come up. #WeAreUnaEuropa #EuropeanUniversities

Today in Riga castle is happening NATIONAL COMPETITIVENESS FORUM where prominent persons are talking and discussing on different Europe's and Latvia's competitiveness issues. My takeaways from this event will be words said by Lars Frølund, Deep Tech Investment expert and executive in Europen Innovation Council: 1. Last 30 years we have lost ability to apreciate knowledge that we don't know yet. Funding goes to well known things. We are behind world leaders in generating new knowledge. 2. Everything in EU is paid by tax payers money. We need to build cross sectoral venture capital fund. Not loosing opportunities of new solutions for economic security. 3. Get together as one Europe. We are building walls across countries, but we can win if we go together.

Today the European Science, Technology and Innovation Policy Councils came together for their annual spring meeting in Vilnius, Lithuania. They signed a Joint Statement about the importance of European and national policies to attract non-European STE(A)M-talent to Europe: Europe is already experiencing a shortage of skilled labor in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STE(A)M). If we want to reach all of Europe’s goals, for example, those concerning the triple transition to a green and digital economy and society, then we will need a lot more people with those specific areas of skills. With this joint statement, we want to highlight the importance of joining complementary strategies together to collectively attract STE(A)M-talent from outside Europe. Beside training national talent, including that of migrants and refugees, recruiting qualified people from other countries is an urgent need as well. If talent from outside Europe that comes to the continent and later on returns home, their home country will benefit from this, as these skilled workers are also highly demanded back home. Through the creation of a trusted international network of innovative minds, we can help and benefit from each other. With this statement, we also want to highlight the benefits for the least developed countries. The statement also emphasizes the importance of a large, unified internal EU market with easy circulation and movement of talent. However, there remains structural barriers hindering circulation and movement, as local regulations differ among countries. The text in the recommendations of the Council of the European Union in December 2023 on a European framework to attract and retain research, innovation and entrepreneurial talents in Europe does not bind Member States enough as they can still set many barriers. This was also pointed out by LERU. We need a European umbrella that enables national and regional regulations to be aligned. As Europe will be attracting foreign STE(A)M-talent, it is in our interest to proactively address the need for a more uniform approach in tackling the threats to knowledge security. In all this, European countries need to maintain a delicate balance between open innovation and strategic autonomy. The future of European competitiveness is built on today’s investment in research and innovation. I welcome the clear messages of the Heitor Report. The Report recommends stimulating more industrial RD&I investment, underpinned by state-of-the-art Technology Infrastructures and many other important suggestions for the next months and years ahead. At the Prosperity directorate we do our best to make this happen.
