If you want to succeed as a relief pharmacist, there are some useful tips and advice that can help you. It is important to be proactive and prepared. Research the pharmacy you are going to work at and bring your own tools and resources. Arrive early and introduce yourself to the staff and manager, asking questions and clarifying expectations. Additionally, you should be flexible and adaptable, ready to adjust to different workflows and schedules, open to learning new things, and respectful of the existing culture of the pharmacy. It is also important to be professional and courteous when dealing with staff and customers, following all rules and regulations, maintaining confidentiality of patient information, documenting any errors or incidents, and seeking feedback in order to improve your performance.

Taking a step back from my pharmacy career and working in a field that was completely out of my wheel house has been so many things. Overwhelming, engaging, challenging, and fulfilling. Stepping away has given me perspective into how I was with my pharmacy career. I wasn't very creative. NETWORKING is in my face right now. I never went to a networking event or conference once I left pharmacy school. If I was at a live CE I would attend and leave and not speak to anyone. Linkedin is great for connecting virtually. How many of you out there are networking in person? There are so many pharmacists out there doing really interesting work within traditional roles. If you are like me and feeling like you are stuck in a certain role and a pharmacist is a pharmacist is a pharmacist get out there and network. Start asking questions and meeting people outside of your bubble.

Many GP pharmacists aspire to become partners, but it takes a lot of hard work to get there. Getting embedded in the practice, having a good understanding of income streams and reports, and consistently making an impact are essential requirements for making that step to partnership. But the most important is to build trust with the partners and “prove yourself”. By making a difference and embedding myself in the practice, I became an indispensable member of the team and was rewarded with partnership. Success as a GP partner requires not only excellent clinical expertise but also good business acumen, strong leadership skills, effective communication skills, flexibility, time management skills, and ongoing professional development. If you’re considering becoming a GP partner, it’s essential to actively develop these skills continuously. My journey to becoming a GP pharmacist and a partner was a fulfilling one, and I have a passion for process improvement and ensuring the safety and quality of healthcare practices. If you’re in a position to be considering this role, let me know if I can support you in any way.

As a relief pharmacist, here's how I prepare for any shift. 1) Arrive Early: Give yourself extra time to familiarize yourself with the pharmacy layout, workflow, and any specific procedures. 2) Bring Necessary Documents: Ensure you have your license, identification, and any other required paperwork. 3) Review Patient Profiles: Take a few minutes to review patient profiles and any ongoing prescriptions to provide consistent care. 4) Communicate Effectively: Introduce yourself to the team, and ask about any unique protocols or preferences they follow. 5) Stay Organized: Keep your workspace tidy and make notes of any important information for a smooth handover to the next pharmacist. 6) Be Adaptable: Every pharmacy is different. Stay flexible and open to new processes and workflows. 7) Ask Questions: Don’t hesitate to ask for help or clarification when needed. It's better to ask than to make assumptions. 8) Stay Professional: Uphold the highest standards of professionalism and patient care throughout your shift.
