🌱 Don't miss an enlightening discussion at the 11th SWR with Mr. Paolo Vergano, Partner at FratiniVergano-European Lawyers, a firm specialising in #trade #law. Mr. Vergano believes that "Sustainability can only be negotiated, not imposed, and #standards are the best instruments to achieve greater sustainability through trade." At the SWR, he will share his insights as part of the panel on 'Trade Regulations And Sustainability Standards – #Challenge Or #Opportunity?'. Key questions to be discussed: • What impact will the European Union’s Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) and other rules being introduced by major markets have on trade with ASEAN? • How are companies and smallholders navigating different sustainability standards, including both trade rules and product certifications? • Are these requirements a burden or do they present opportunities, such as granting market access and giving financiers more confidence to invest in ASEAN’s resource sectors? 🔗 Register now: http://bit.ly/SWR2024 🌎 Theme: Next Economy and the Future of Resources 📅 Date: Thursday, 9 May 2024 🕝 Time: 9:00am - 4:00pm 📍 Venue: Fullerton Hotel, Singapore For more information, visit our website at: https://lnkd.in/gNjX92Y 👤 For membership enquiries: membership@siiaonline.org 📰 For media-related enquiries: media@siiaonline.org #SWR2024 #11SWR #ASEAN #sustainability #SIIA

🌍🌿 Are you ready for the World Trade Organization’s annual #AidforTrade Global Review? Make sure to join UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD), WTO, and the Forum on Trade, Environment & the SDGs (TESS) on 26 June at 13:00 CET for a crucial session on “Nationally Determined Contributions 3.0, Trade, Finance, and Investment Gaps and the role of international cooperation and Aid for Trade.” Trade, investment, and green industrial policies can drive carbon emission reductions set forth in National Determined Contributions (NDCs) and sustainable development trade-related policies and measure. But, NDCs can also create trade barriers and impact the competitiveness and sustainable development priorities of economies. Against this backdrop, coherent trade and investment policies are important for economies to design and meet their NDCs 3.0. 🌐💼 This session will: ➡️ explore views from WTO Members on how economies can leverage trade and investment to achieve NDCs ➡️ examine how climate objectives can offer new trade and investment opportunities for sustainable development ➡️ consider capacity gaps to be addressed for developing economies to reflect trade, finance and investment considerations, priorities, and policies in their NDCs ➡️ discuss UNCTAD’s recent research on Investment in Sustainable Energy for All (see here: https://lnkd.in/dJ8uQZ6n) ➡️ present a range of trade policy options that can be used by Members to enhance their climate mitigations and adaptation strategies to meet their climate objectives under the Paris Agreement Speakers include: 🔹 PEDRO MANUEL MORENO, Deputy Secretary-General, UN Trade and Development 🔹 Chantal Line Carpentier, Head, Trade, Environment, Climate Change and Sustainable Development, UN Trade and Development 🔹 Matthew Wilson, Ambassador, Barbados 🔹 Kimberley Botwright, Head of Sustainable Trade, World Economic Forum 🔹 Sok Sopheak, Secretary of State of Commerce, Cambodia 🔹 Pimchanok Pitfield, Ambassador, Thailand 🔹 Jimmy Rantes, Director General, Ministry of Trade and Commerce, Vanuatu 🔹 Aik Hoe Lim, Director, Trade and Environment Division, WTO Learn more: here: https://lnkd.in/ePS2XXCX

🌏 Tulip Consulting is excited to share a recent publication titled "Emerging Trade Opportunities for LDCs from the Green Transition," authored by Colette van der Ven. It was featured in the WTO's policy note 'LDC Trade Priorities—Looking Forward' launched at the 9th Global Review of Aid for Trade. 💡 This publication emphasises ensuring that the #greentransition does not create a green divide. It calls for a narrative shift at the WTO. Developed countries must acknowledge the negative implications of green trade measures and adopt an approach aligned with environment and development objectives. #LDCs must identify mechanisms to leverage trade rules to help them achieve green development objectives. 💡 This publication outlines key strategies for implementing this shift, covering environmental goods and services, technology transfer, non-tariff barriers, and technical and financial assistance. It also underscores the need for new institutional arrangements to address the #trade-#environment-#development nexus. Tulip is grateful to the World Trade Organization, especially Taufiqur Rahman for this opportunity.
