The race is on for all banks and payment service providers in the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) countries to offer instant payments under the new SEPA Instant Credit Transfer scheme – with the January 9, 2025 deadline looming. All stakeholders are going to need to work quickly and cooperatively to meet this deadline; the good news is that we’re already seeing tremendous energy in that direction. This week, as several of my colleagues and I attend EBAday in Lisbon with STET, whom we recently announced reached a new record high in the past 12 months. STET – using ACI Worldwide technology – processed more than 50 million cross-border instant payment transactions. But that’s only the beginning. Yesterday, SIBS' participation in the Web Summit Lisbon was marked by a big announcement: the launch of EuroPA - European Payments Alliance with the first international #MBWAY transfer! 📲🌍 Mobile payments are becoming an integral part of Europeans' daily lives. To facilitate this, SIBS united #MBWAY, #BancomatPay, and #Bizum to enable service interoperability, simplifying instant payments between the three countries. This launch is the first step towards interoperability for over 45 million users and 182 financial institutions. The interoperability of mobile payment solutions in southern Europe becomes a reality with the creation of EuroPA | European Payments Alliance 🇪🇺 The launch of EuroPA represents the first step towards interoperability between +45 million users of #MBWAY from SIBS in 🇵🇹 ; Bizum in 🇪🇸 ; and BANCOMAT S.p.A. in 🇮🇹 ; as well as more than 182 financial institutions. This is expected to be made widely available from 2025 mostly starting from Italy, Portugal, and Spain, with the overall aim to expand across the region of Europe in the future.
