Throwback to the '90s: A Nostalgic Look at Printing Wisdom When your business has been around for over 40 years, you gather quite the treasure trove of artifacts. At The Bespoke Group HQ, we’ve amassed an archive of exhibition-quality Graphic Arts books, annuals, and boxes brimming with work examples, photos, transparencies, and artwork from some truly memorable client projects. One gem from the 1990s? Piconyms, a reference book of pre-press terms created for the UK’s Printing Industry Federation, PICON LIMITED. Authored by the esteemed UK journalist Simon Eccles, it was designed to educate and engage member businesses and young newcomers to the industry — and it was a hit! Bespoke was tasked with designing and producing the book, and we brought it to life with a series of witty and memorable illustrations by a talented artist. These cartoons humorously captured complex processes, making them more accessible and fun for day-to-day use. Fast forward 30 years: While many of these processes have been automated or replaced by technology, the challenge of engaging younger generations with the world of print has only grown. Over the coming weeks, we’ll share some of these timeless illustrations, celebrating their charm and highlighting the creativity that print inspires. Here’s the first one: ‘Trapping’—a pre-press technique that adds overlap between colours, designed to compensate for registration errors in litho printing. You can try it on your chosen style and scenes too. Here's how we structure our prompt: What: Easter bunnies Where: Surrounded with easter eggs Style: Cartoon - If you have a reference image; The last step is to type the parameter -sref, and you could paste the reference image URL. Our prompt would looks like this:   "easter bunnies surrounded with decorated easter eggs cartoon style --sref URL_risograph.png (image URL)" Fun Fact ⭐ The Risograph printing technique originated in Japan in the mid-20th century, developed by the Riso Kagaku Corporation. It was initially used for high-speed photocopying before evolving into a distinct printing method. A technique similar to digital screen printing that combines the principles of screen printing with the convenience of office copiers. It's known for producing vibrant colors and distinctive textures, often described as 'perfect imperfections'. 🌙 A Night on Press 🌙 The loud, rhythmic sound of the web press surrounds me, mixed with the strong chemical smell of ink, creating a sensory symphony. I walk towards the pressman, waiting by the first press sheets. The make-ready is complete, and they await my final approval. The press computer has done its job, bringing the colors on the sheet close to perfection, but not quite there yet. Despite all our technological advances, the human touch is still essential on a press. The magic of blending the four primary colors into a final masterpiece isn't complete; the last details need our attention. Colors are subjective, each hue seen through our unique lens. To me, colors aren't just real; they are the emotions we feel when we look at them. On a press, the hues we see are influenced by many variables: the brand and quality of the inks, the paper's coating, and the press itself. Each job carries its own distinct fingerprint, impossible to replicate exactly from one press to another. It’s up to the pressman’s experience and my eye for color to make the final adjustments, perfecting the ink density. At this crucial moment, the cyan, magenta, yellow, and black come together in a harmonious symphony, guided by technology and the subtle touch of human hands. 🙌 🎶 This symphony isn’t heard with our ears, but seen with our eyes. 🎵 It's incredibly satisfying to see the results of our efforts, a vision brought to life on a roll of paper. 💙🩷💛🖤 #webpress #CMYK #OffsetPrinting #printing

🧑🎨 Artists have an infinite colour palette at their disposal, but in commercial printing, we achieve that endless range of hues by using just four basic colours: 🌺 Magenta 🌕 Yellow 💙 Cyan ⬛️ Black This limited palette requires us to simulate gradients and tones by arranging a myriad of tiny dots that transform these four colours into accurate printed images. We recently worked with an artist to create a look-book 📗 intended to capture the attention of galleries and showcase a collection of her genres, aiming to secure her exhibitions tailored to specific audiences. This process involves several meticulous steps: 💡 Photography: The artwork is first captured in high resolution 💡 Proofing: Initial digital proofs are created to begin the colour-correction process 💡 Calibration: The screen and output devices are calibrated to ensure the digital images accurately reflect the physical artwork 💡 Colour Correction: Using Adobe Photoshop, we meticulously adjust the colours to replicate the vibrancy and depth of the original pieces 💡 Proof Iterations: Multiple rounds of proofs are generated, continually refining the output to achieve an optimal match. This is a technique that’s often used in litho (long run printing). But for this project we were working with a digital press as the print run was just 150 copies. Digital presses have less fine-tuning on the press run, so it’s even more crucial that the image is fully corrected during the proofing stage. 💚 This detailed approach is part of the 💡Print Wisdom💡 at NEXUScpp, where we understand the nuances of translating art from canvas to print. This method is based on three primary colors: red, green, and blue (RGB). When combined, these colors create new colors by adding wavelengths together. For example, red and green light make yellow, red and blue create magenta, and blue and green produce cyan. When all three colors are mixed in equal proportions, they form white light. Additive color mixing is used in digital screens and lighting. 2. Subtractive Color Mixing Subtractive mixing involves combining pigments, dyes, or paints. The primary colors in this model are cyan, magenta, and yellow (CMY). When these #colors mix, they subtract wavelengths from white light, producing different colors. For instance, mixing cyan and magenta yields blue, magenta and yellow make red, and cyan and yellow produce green. Combining all three colors creates black or a very dark color.
