"This economics is better named ego-nomics, as its focus on personal financial return is more ego (from the Latin “I”) than eco (from the Greek “oikos” meaning household). In our current interdependent world, our household is Earth and all its living beings." "Oikos" is where the word "economy" is derived from (house + nemo meaning to manage). Ironically, it is also where the word "ecology" (house + logos meaning to study) is also derived from. Somewhere along the way, in this enlightened word of ours, we have separated the two. According to our current neoclassical economic thinking, the two are distinct entities. But they are not. The economy depends entirely on the ecological wellbeing of this planet, and therefore so does our future and the prosperity of future generations. It's time we reconnected the two before it's too late.
