The Viewer Citizen: a symposium on SVoDs, audiences and democracy in Europe On 23 May 2025, Örebro University is hosting a symposium to explore what we know about SVOD audiences (focusing on audiovisual fiction) and democracy in the European context. I'm in Ghent this week for the Justice Visions conference where I'll be chairing this session I co-organized with Natasha Todi and Nael Georges (our session abstract posted below). If you're in town and would like to meet up and chat, feel free to message me! ----- "In ongoing debates around transitional justice, ubiquitous infrastructures such as databases are largely critically ignored. This is despite the rise of bespoke human rights databases developed and deployed to support the pursuit of various transitional justice processes. We are seeing the datafication of transitional justice where violations are rendered calculable, actors are turned into data, and accountability decisions are founded on digital evidence. Given its epistemic and methodological impact, the transitional justice database must be seen then as source, subject, and object of engagement by not only studying the data it holds, but also understanding the mechanisms and conditions surrounding it. This panel then looks at the development and utilization of these databases as political ecologies of mnemonic participation. Specifically, we seek to highlight and discuss various methodologies that aim to center the role and participation of victims in data/base and memory work. We will hear from three initiatives across the globe: (1) AHRDO’s art-based approaches granting dignity and recognition to victims and survivors, (2) Dawlaty’s oral history project preserving the memory of social life and conflict by marginalized communities, and (3) AJAR’s participatory and trauma-informed tools for documenting experiences of survivors. We will discuss how these initiatives and their epistemic and methodological assertions are supported, mediated, translated, and limited by data/digital infrastructures. This panel gives attention to the sociotechnical politics of transitional justice infrastructures vis-a-vis victim participation and how they shape the knowledge and practices of the field."

Ironically, it is also where the word "ecology" (house + logos meaning to study) is also derived from. Somewhere along the way, in this enlightened word of ours, we have separated the two. According to our current neoclassical economic thinking, the two are distinct entities. But they are not. The economy depends entirely on the ecological wellbeing of this planet, and therefore so does our future and the prosperity of future generations. It's time we reconnected the two before it's too late. Tomorrow afternoon, the Security, Democracies & Cities conference in Brussels starts. The conference will take place from wednesday until friday and is hosted by European Forum for Urban Security (Efus). Nordic Safe Cities will attend and contribute at three sessions: - On Thursday the 21st of March from 4.30-6.00 pm (studio), our Deputy Director Lotte Fast Carlsen will speak at the thematic session - Protecting freedom of expression and diversity in shared public spaces. The session will discuss the safe use of public spaces in the context of international tensions and crises: How can we ensure that the city remains a safe place for democratic expression during protest demonstrations? How can we intervene in digital public spaces in terms of monitoring and preventing urban tensions? - On Friday morning from 9-10 am (R3), Head of Digital Prevention Sebastian Jørgensen, and Deputy Director Lotte Fast Carlsen, will head the how to session - How to understand and prevent hate, extremism, and disinformation online. At the session they present our Safe Digital City initiative and the challenges of hate, extremism, and disinformation that takes place on digital platforms. Addressing these challenges requires a systematic understanding of why, where, and how the local hate is formed and spread online. The aim of the session is to foster a discussion on existing digital prevention structures, inspire the participants with new tools, methods, and promising practices from three selected safe digital cities and ultimately, to help cities develop unique concepts and inspirations for safeguarding their digital democracies. - And lastly, on Friday from 11 am - 12.30 pm., Nordic Pioneer Prize winner 2022 Luqman Wadood will speak at the plenary session - Renewing our democratic practices, linking security, democracy and cities. The session discusses the gap between citizens and institutions widens, fostering the rise of authoritarian movements that challenge the very validity of democratic systems, as well as mistrust - even distrust fuelled by disinformation campaigns. We look very much forward to attend the conference and experience how European cities can learn from our Nordic member cities and vice versa. As the house of organised civil society, we are committed to listen to EU citizens' voice through events such as our Civil Society Week and our Youth Group pilot project. Happy International Day of Democracy! I believe that Civil society is fundamental to a thriving democracy. Participatory democracy isn’t just a complement to representative democracy—it’s a core part of it.
