Tom's boat doesn't have an obvious physical keel like many boats. It's not a v-shaped hull, and it doesn't have a permanent structure that drops down low into the water (like most yachts). It's a smooth curved hull, almost flat, meaning that very little of the boat is under water. Less boat in the water, means less drag, and when the wind is directly behind him, that means it's much faster. 🏎️ • You'd think this would make it very easy to capsize, but you would be wrong. The design of the boat, is voluminous at the bottom, with a low profile top, and this lowers the centre of gravity. Rolling it requires a major force (a crane is usually required to roll these boats in testing). In addition, all of Tom's kit is packed into the bottom of the boat, making it heavier, lowering the centre of gravity further. If you force the boat to be upside down, it'll roll right back over, even in flat calm water (even faster in choppy water). 🔁 • Now, that flat bottom is great when the wind is behind him, but when the wind is side on, this would cause problems. The boat would be pushed laterally across the water, losing speed, and with the rudder permanently in the water, often this will just turn the boat side on to the conditions. 😨 • That's where the daggerboard comes in. At a certain angle of wind, the daggerboard can be slotted into place. This will help reduce the lateral movement and in fact increase forward speed. Imagine a slot car. The blade on a slot car goes into the slot, this is a bit like the rudder. If you push the car with your finger on the side, the slot car will move round to the side. Now imagine putting a fixed blade that doesn't move towards the rear of the car (in addition to the slot at the front), now try pushing the car on the side...anything slightly to the rear of dead centre will actually move the car forwards.
