It can often feel like the bays in modern car parks are getting smaller, but in truth it’s probably just that more of us are driving bigger cars. As a result, too many of today’s car parks feel like they are no longer fit for purpose, with people having to struggle to get in and out of their vehicles due to the reduced amount of space available to open their doors fully. One solution might be to make the bays in car parks bigger, but would that be fair on the owners or managers of the car park? Why are all these bike lanes taking up space where I want to drive? Why are these streetcars so big that I can't drive around them? Why is my green light delayed while pedestrians get to start crossing? Why has the speed limit been reduced and making me drive more slowly? Why are there speeding and red-light cameras sending me fines? How we perceive ourselves on the roadways influences our perspectives on how transportation should work. If you see yourself only as a driver, these frustrations make sense. But put yourself in the shoes of a cyclist or pedestrian, and your perspective changes. You may ask different questions. How can we build a fully protected bike lane network so that more people choose to cycle and there are fewer cars and less congestion? How can public transit be reliable, fast, and safe so that more people use it and there are fewer cars and less congestion? How can pedestrians' safety be improved so more people choose to walk and there are fewer cars and less congestion? How can we improve safety for vulnerable road users by slowing down cars and enforcing the rules so that we don't have to call them vulnerable anymore? If everyone wants to keep driving and hope that everyone else gets out of their way, congestion will only get worse. Reducing the volume of vehicles by shifting people to transit, bicycles, or walking is how the space will be freed up to ease congestion. As they say, you are not stuck in traffic, you are the traffic.
