Two weeks ago I had the opportunity to present at four sessions at NSLA and it was POWERFUL! The fearless Laurie Browne and I facilitated working sessions with the very talented Character at Camp Advisory Working Group Tim Huchton Timothy Raines, PhD, CDE® Nila Rosen Jacob Sorenson Shawna Rosenzweig Kerry Salvo who advised on the application process for camps to apply for the Character at Camp Academy. They pushed boundaries, and respectfully disagreed. They thought outside the box with their suggestions and ideas and asked the $1 million questions. I was humbled. Another round of kudos for the character gurus @jenniferurban and @janebuckley who facilitated an event designed to raise awareness of character frameworks and principles and explain why character matters now more than ever. Representatives from Alliance for Camp Health Boys & Girls Clubs of America Girls Inc. Diabetes Education and Camping Association, Scouting America National 4-H Council The Salvation Army Girl Scouts of the USA YMCA of the USA, National Recreation and Park Association Search Institute Association of Children's Museums attended and engaged in a concept mapping activity designed to articulate an organization’s specific character focused activities and how those activities relate to the intended outcomes.   A few thoughts: **We should all present our ideas to multidisciplinary groups, allow ourselves to be vulnerable, and be open to having our assumptions challenged. **Connecting and allowing time and space for learning together can foster deeper relationship-building and connection. People learn in different ways and formats (no surprise here) so it was critical to have time and space to have break-out sessions, informal working time, and structured learning time together. *** Translation of language and ideas to different stakeholders is critical. Again not a shocker but trying to collect useful and detailed information to inform grantee selection in a way that is accessible to camps is HARD! ***Out-of-school time professionals are so gracious with their time and ideas and I was reminded that we are so much stronger together. Big kudos to lots of people who showed up and shared important perspectives Bristol Posatko Alicia Danenberg Bryn Spielvogel @lisameerts (And sorry for the delay in posting, I have realized that giving 8 conference presentations in 4 weeks is a little more than I can handle). #ACA #NSLA #outofschooltime #CharacterMatters
