Two weeks ago I had the opportunity to present at four sessions at NSLA and it was POWERFUL! The fearless Laurie Browne and I facilitated working sessions with the very talented Character at Camp Advisory Working Group Tim Huchton Timothy Raines, PhD, CDE® Nila Rosen Jacob Sorenson Shawna Rosenzweig Kerry Salvo who advised on the application process for camps to apply for the Character at Camp Academy. They pushed boundaries, and respectfully disagreed. They thought outside the box with their suggestions and ideas and asked the $1 million questions. I was humbled. Another round of kudos for the character gurus @jenniferurban and @janebuckley who facilitated an event designed to raise awareness of character frameworks and principles and explain why character matters now more than ever. Representatives from Alliance for Camp Health Boys & Girls Clubs of America Girls Inc. Diabetes Education and Camping Association, Scouting America National 4-H Council The Salvation Army Girl Scouts of the USA YMCA of the USA, National Recreation and Park Association Search Institute Association of Children's Museums attended and engaged in a concept mapping activity designed to articulate an organization’s specific character focused activities and how those activities relate to the intended outcomes. A few thoughts: **We should all present our ideas to multidisciplinary groups, allow ourselves to be vulnerable, and be open to having our assumptions challenged. **Connecting and allowing time and space for learning together can foster deeper relationship-building and connection. People learn in different ways and formats (no surprise here) so it was critical to have time and space to have break-out sessions, informal working time, and structured learning time together. *** Translation of language and ideas to different stakeholders is critical. Again not a shocker but trying to collect useful and detailed information to inform grantee selection in a way that is accessible to camps is HARD! ***Out-of-school time professionals are so gracious with their time and ideas and I was reminded that we are so much stronger together. Big kudos to lots of people who showed up and shared important perspectives Bristol Posatko Alicia Danenberg Bryn Spielvogel @lisameerts (And sorry for the delay in posting, I have realized that giving 8 conference presentations in 4 weeks is a little more than I can handle). #ACA #NSLA #outofschooltime #CharacterMatters

What a great event! The 15th Annual TWU Golf Outing was a rousing success. Union members care and want the best opportunities in life for their children. Our sponsors (Independence Blue Cross and United Concordia Dental) have supported these efforts to provide scholarship opportunities for the last 15 years. Each year at least 10 receipents recieve a college or trade school scholarship. We are enternally grateful. However, what about health equity and necessary work to eliminate health disparities? How do we address the life expectancy in specific zip codes such as 19121 or 19146 or 19131 to list a few? What's being done to address chronic condition such as asthma and obesity? Summer is fast approaching. Where are the sponsorship of gymnasiums or expansion of recreation center hours or corporate (partnership) hiring of life guards for pools? What about sponsoring summer basketball leagues at the local Big 5 universities? What about eliminating food deserts within these zip codes? More can be done to help eliminate the long list of things that negatively impact our collective community.

It's Afterschool Professionals Appreciation Week (APAW)! 💡 Did you know... ➡ An estimated 7.8 million young people participate in afterschool programs yearly in the U.S. ➡ Over 850,000 highly skilled and valuable afterschool professionals work with young people during out-of-school time (OST). ➡ Research shows that afterschool professionals are the key to program quality that mitigates risk factors and positively impacts youth outcomes. ➡ Afterschool programs run by skilled professionals result in increased social and emotional skills, school attendance, and academic performance. Recognizing afterschool professionals isn't just about acknowledging their hard work; it's also about supporting their ongoing growth and development. Providing access to professional development opportunities, such as those offered by the Forum’s Weikart Center for Youth Program Quality, is crucial for enhancing skills and effectiveness in working with young people. For more information on APAW and how to show your appreciation from the National AfterSchool Association (NAA), visit: https://lnkd.in/gXhr8pkM #HeartOfAfterschool #OSTProfessionals

🎓 "1 in 3 children from disadvantaged backgrounds struggle at school. We’re here to change that." At Bath Rugby Foundation, we believe education isn’t one-size-fits-all. Our Alternative Learning Hub takes a fresh approach — encouraging young people to present on topics they’re passionate about. By giving them the chance to teach their peers, they build confidence, life skills, and a renewed connection with education. 💙 Your support during the Big Give has already helped us change the narrative for so many young people. But we’re not done yet. No child should feel left behind. 👉 See how we're changing lives in our Impact Report: #EducationForAll #EveryChildMatters #BathRugbyFoundation #ConfidenceThroughLearning

Exciting news...after an incredible journey at St. George's School, we're thrilled to announce that we’ve made the big decision to take a gap year instead of going straight to college! Over the next twelve months, we’re diving into how giving back looks outside the United States and beyond the traditional Western philanthropic view we’re used to. We’ll be asking ourselves: - How do we understand social challenges in different cultures? - What new problem-solving approaches can we learn? - How can we challenge our preconceptions to grow as individuals and global citizens? From the mountains of South Africa with @tiltingfutures to the peaks of the Himalayas with @nolsedu, we'll be challenging ourselves, broadening our perspectives, and gathering insights to enhance our approach to youth empowerment through Service Academy. Along the way, we'll be sharing our experiences, reflections, and learnings with you. We want to spark a global conversation about the power of service to transform lives and communities. Will you join us on this journey of discovery and impact? Read our latest blog post for the full scoop on our gap year plans and how we're taking Service Academy global: https://lnkd.in/gQgpqsRe (Link in bio) Let's explore the world of service together! Ryan & Thomas Growney #NewServiceAcademy Image description: Against a white background, the words "From St. George's to the World: Our Gap Year Adventure Begins" surround a photographic image of Ryan and Thomas against a map of the world. How did we make this college success program NOT feel like yet another course? We tapped program alums, now young professionals in the field, to share their post-program journeys. Scholars felt seen, supported, and inspired for the road ahead. When you're developing a course at your organization, how do you bring your community into the process?
