April has been a particularly distressing month for women across Australia. It seems like each morning we wake to news that another woman has been murdered (not 'lost their life' - murdered), and these are just the stories we hear about. Mothers. Sisters. Daughters. Friends. Colleagues. Gone forever, swept up in the wave of gender-based violence that is tearing through our country. Sadly, many of these deaths could have been prevented, compounding the tragedy of bright lives cut too short and highlighting the failings of our justice system. It's easy to feel helpless. I know I often do. But there are small steps we can each take. Show up to rallies. Write to our MPs demanding funding and reform. Sign the petitions. Call out those who deny the problem. Make it known to the people around you that you are a safe space for them. Educate yourself on signs of domestic, financial and emotional abuse. Hold the men in your life accountable. Be accountable yourself. Model to your children what a healthy and safe relationship looks like. It is imperative that we come together and demand change. Violence against women and girls is one of the most widespread human rights violations globally. Migrant women, especially those with irregular migration status, are at an even higher risk of gender-based violence. Let’s take action to create a safer world for women. As part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign by UN Women, I’m proud to support the Rivina Foundation. Founded by human rights advocate Anna Rivina, the foundation provides free psychological and legal support to Russian-speaking women in emigration facing violence. Sexual assault offences were reported by 5,474 Victorian women and girls in 2023. 87% of sexual assaults recorded in Victoria in 2023 were female. The largest cohort of victim-survivors in Victoria, at 37%, were at the time of the offence aged between 10 and 17 years of age. In the 16 days the Safe. Everywhere. Always. challenge takes place, 240 cases of sexual assault will be reported by women and girls in Victoria. 9 out of 10 sexual assault offences will not be reported to authorities. The Australian Bureau of Statistics noted 2023 was its worst year on record for sexual offences. This doesn’t even begin to touch on homicide and non-sexual assault against women. With the Energy and Water Ombudsman (Victoria) (EWOV), I am walking, running, and cycling 100km to raise donations to fight this ever-growing epidemic. My personal fundraising goal is $240 in recognition of each female victim-survivor that will report a sexual offence during the challenge. UPDATE - Our small but mighty team of 30+ walkers at KPMG set ourselves a humble fundraising goal of $5,000 at the outset. Within days, we had smashed this and revised our goal to $7,500. Now, 8 days into the walking campaign, we have had to revise the goal again and are now going for $10,000 in donations. The reason we care, is that this is a really important campaign. This year the gendered violence in this country has been declared a crisis. Every 4 minutes, police receive a call that's related to domestic and family violence and every 4 days a woman has been killed by a man, more often than not, known to her. We've lost a staggering amount of women to violence this year in Australia - it's beyond comprehension. I dare not enter the number as it is growing scarily. Every step and every dollar makes a difference [and is tax deductible]. Funds go towards tangible efforts to reduce gender-based violence in this country, and around the globe.

UN Women has this week launched its 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. In response The Caring Family Foundation (TCFF) has announced £225,000 of grants to grassroots organisations combating domestic abuse against women. TCFF has awarded grants to domestic abuse organisations including: Latin American Women's Aid, Karma Nirvana, The Angelou Centre, Panahghar, Women of Grace UK, Refuge, Solace Women's Aid and Advance Charity to support the vital work they do. Every 10 minutes globally, partners and family members kill a woman or a girl intentionally. Domestic abuse remains a critical issue in the UK and TCFF seeks to help provide life-saving and life-changing resources that offer hope and healing to women and children when they need it most. In recent months, we have also been proud to support the The Independent's Brick by Brick campaign for Refuge, which has now reached its target to raise £300,000 to build an innovative refuge – a true home where women escaping abusive partners, and any child or pet they bring with them, can be safe and recover. The stats are shocking. We are extremely honoured to be working with these stand-out organisations committed to making the world a safer place for women and girls. #NoExcuse
