🌿📚 Excited to announce the publication of our latest research paper: "Utilisation of Indigenous Knowledge to control gastrointestinal nematodes in Southern Africa"! 🌍🐄 Authors: Kamba ET and Chimonyo M. In this study, we delved deep into the untapped potential of local knowledge in developing resilient herds in Southern Africa. We explored the wealth of Indigenous Knowledge (IK) available beyond the use of medicinal plants, uncovering its significant contribution to GIN control. One key revelation from our research is the emphasis on prevention embedded within IK. In the face of droughts, our findings highlight the importance of selecting resilient cattle during the acquisition of foundation stock. This proactive approach not only mitigates current GIN issues but also prevents future challenges. Our paper sheds light on the invaluable insights IK offers in addressing complex agricultural issues, underscoring the need to further explore and integrate traditional knowledge systems into modern practices. Role of Scientific "Broker": ASSET Project acts as a neutral mediator, ensuring scientific legitimacy and aiding informed decision-making, thereby strengthening farmers' legitimacy with decision-makers. 3. Multi-scale Collaboration: The work spans from local policies to international bodies like the UN, fostering a legal framework for scaling up. Despite challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic, a survey by the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) found that over two-thirds of South African agribusinesses adopted innovative practices between 2019 and 2021. Notably, 63.6% engaged in process innovations and 38.5% in product innovations. The survey highlights the resilience and adaptability of the sector, with innovation-active businesses showing higher employment rates, market expansion and intellectual property development. This month, we are putting the spotlight on local pig and chicken breeds 🌍 This week, we are taking a look at the Turopolje Pig! 🐷 The pig, also called Turopoljska svinja, was created during the Middle Ages in the Turopolje region in Croatia 🇭🇷 As it developed over a long period of time, the breed perfectly adapted to its natural environment 💪 Thanks to its resilience and good adaptation to outdoor rearing, the pig has served as an important food source for the local population for centuries. Visually, it is known for its distinctive sporadic black spots on a white or grey coat, and it has mostly curly hair and drooping, half-folded ears. TSUAg Dr. Doc Lap Tran is making some serious headway on research projects with support from the @USDA! Dr. Tran secured a pair of impactful grants this month from USDA-backed organizations NIFA and the FAS-Scientific Cooperation Research Program. The NIFA grant backs Dr. Tran's "Resilience capacity of rural households post COVID-19 pandemic in Tennessee: Food security policy implications" project, which will run for the next three years. He also secured a grant from the USDA-FAS on "Fostering Sustainable Agriculture in Vietnam." 🇻🇳 Both projects will begin this fall and run to 2026. “We cannot plants seeds with closed fists. To sow, we must open our hands,” these words of Nobel Prize Laureate Adolfo Pérez Esquivel, not only describe the essence of the seed seed sector, but more importantly, it’s a call for collective action.   The opening ceremony of the AFSTA Seed Trade Association Congress 2024 in Mombasa, Kenya, allowed me to testify to the shared commitment between our associations (International Seed Federation and AFSTA Seed Trade Association) and members to increase the seed choice in the continent. Esquivel’s  profound sentiment encapsulates the essence of our mission today. We must extend our hands, join forces, to sow the seeds of innovation and resilience in agriculture, to secure a sustainable future for generations to come.   We need the boldness of the private seed sector, its ambition and ingenuity to help improve access to agricultural innovation in Africa and we need to amplify African voices from the private sector at local, national and international level.   To sow, we need open to hands; to succeed, we need to act collaboratively! Seed is life!
