“Our gender pay gap is now around 4%, and our senior leadership is nearly 50/50. But we haven’t stopped there. The top of our organization now reflects the overall workforce, with 60% women in leadership roles. This is a huge win for diversity and inclusion!” Hear more from Stuart Love, Chief Executive of Westminster City Council, on our latest episode of Building Healthy Relationships – The 4 Habits podcasts. Why Are Men Often Reluctant to Advocate for Women at Work? I recently tuned into the VEST Her podcast featuring Brad Johnson, a gender-inclusive culture expert. He shared some eye-opening insights into why men often hesitate to advocate for women at work. Besides Brad, I was the only other male on the call… Here are some key takeaways: 1. Exclusion from Conversations: Men often feel sidelined in equity discussions, leading to detachment. Let's actively involve them to foster genuine engagement. 2. Common Pitfalls: Performative allyship and unintentional reinforcement of stereotypes can undermine efforts. Genuine support involves listening, learning, and thoughtful action. 3. Reluctance Factors: -Fear of Backlash: Concerns about negative reactions or loss of social standing. -Lack of Awareness: Not recognizing the extent of gender bias. -Uncertainty About Role: Not knowing how to help effectively. 4. Intersectionality & Allyship: Understanding diverse experiences is crucial. Men can be better allies by educating themselves and offering intersectional mentorship. 5. Combatting Bias: Gender bias in evaluations persists. Implementing blind evaluations, bias training, and objective criteria can help create fairness. 6. Engaging Men: -Education and Training: Equip men with the knowledge to advocate effectively. -Safe Spaces for Dialogue: Encourage open, judgment-free conversations. -Recognition and Reward: Highlight and reward genuine efforts. Men's active participation is vital for true gender equity. Let’s step up, get educated, and take meaningful action both at work and home.

Thank you for sharing this information. It’s critical to get this out there to bring more awareness and action to the racial and gender inequities experienced by indigenous women. I wish I could say I haven’t had this experience but it wouldn’t be true. If these disparities are going to be changed, we need to: 1) Acknowledge this issue exists. By understanding the disparities and biases faced by indigenous women, we can work toward meaningful change. 2) Change policies by investing in those that empower all women and promote equality. Affordable childcare and parental leave are two areas that can make a huge impact. 3) Promote role models because Representation Matters. More role models and mentors inspire others.

Tribal Governments have obligations to their citizens & others in their employ to create an environment where economic equity is a priority. Indian Preference is more than a policy, it’s a duty of Native Nations to protect economic opportunities that improve the quality of life for Indian Country. Employment is one of the areas that can create big impacts, yet is often neglected by leadership. How does it serve your people to have the Non-Native professionals earning market pay, while native females struggle to pull in the same value? And how will you explain that to the youth you hope take their place one day? Give them the opportunity to have solid employment in their own Nation.
