📸🩺 Distended Intestines: What to Look For on Abdominal X-rays 🩺📸 In today's Case Rounds, Dr. Weissman from Radimal examines an abdominal radiograph of a dog, focusing on the intestines. 🐾 Key points: 1. Trace the large intestine on the lateral projection, starting at the pelvic inlet. 2. Identify small intestinal segments and measure their distension. 3. Use the 1.6 times the height of L5 rule to determine if the small intestine is distended. In this case, we see two populations of bowel: normal-sized and distended. This could indicate a mechanical obstruction, which may require further investigation like abdominal ultrasound or exploratory surgery. Got questions? Meet Mookie! Mookie is a 2-year-old French Bulldog who was transferred to our hospital from his regular veterinarian. Mookie had developed bladder stones that needed to be removed immediately. They had created an obstruction in his bladder and this was preventing him from being able to urinate. Mookie was prepped for a surgery called a cystotomy. This procedure involves making an incision in the bladder to remove, in Mookie’s case, the stones creating the obstruction. During surgery, several small stones were removed from Mookie’s urethra. After surgery, Mookie began urinating normally and was hospitalized on supportive care until his pain was well controlled. Once he was feeling better, he was able to go home! Mookie’s stones were sent for testing and came back as cystine type stones. Cystine is a type of amino acid in the body that is normally reabsorbed by the kidneys. Cystinuria in an inherited condition that occurs when the kidneys are not able to properly reabsorb cystine, leading to the formation of stones. Left untreated, a urinary obstruction in any animal will be fatal. We prescribed a urinary diet for Mookie, which can help dissolve and prevent any further stone formation events. We wish Mookie a stone free life! #MiracleMonday #animalemergency #vergi #vergi247 #vergitotherescue #wesavelives #locallyownedandoperated #familyownedandoperated #houstonstrong #houstonheroes #heresince1977 #vergicrew #vergiisthefirstandonly #veterinaryemergencyroomgroup #as #herewhenyouneedus #herewhenyouneedusmost #dogs #cats #dogandcatemergencies

‘’Batal, a true hero’’⠀ Presented after enduring a shotgun blast to the face, he was in a state of shock and bleeding from severe facial trauma. Through meticulous stabilization and critical care, we initiated facial wound treatment, involving debridement, tie-over bandages, and various dressings to ready the surgical site for advanced procedures.⠀ ⠀ His initial surgery, encompassing enucleation and maxillary bone debridement using precision tools, was followed by a crucial five-day regimen of calcium alginate dressing to promote optimal granulation tissue formation. Subsequently, a superficial temporalis flap procedure was performed as described by Fahie et al. This technique relies on the cutaneous branch of the superficial temporal artery, showcasing remarkable anatomical precision, with experimental studies confirming its efficacy.⠀ ⠀ 7 days after surgery, 95% of the flap was viable. Remarkably, just two weeks following surgery, Batal achieved a full recovery and now revels in a fulfilling life once more.⠀ ⠀ Lebanese Veterinary Referrals ⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ #orthopedicsurgery #savelives #veterinarysurgery #vetsurgeon #vetlife #lvr #animalcare #livelovebeirut #catcare #catsurgery #AnimalWellness #petcareservices #veterinaria #newbeginnings #rescuecat

-In cats, uterine stump pyometra is reported to occur in neutered queens either because of ovarian remnants or following administration of progestagens. Ovarian remnant syndrome is usually diagnosed when a previously spayed queen shows recurrent behavioural signs of oestrous. -In our case the was spayed 10 years ago following this procedure the cat started to show signs of heat cycle, at age of 12 years the cat had vaginal discharge and abdominal discomfort and decreased appetite. -Exploratory surgery done we found right ovarian remenant tissue with cystic structures and huge stump attached to intestinal lobe , blunt dissection done with complete removal of both ovarian remenant and stump. #veterinarymedicine #veterinarysurgery

Radiographs vs Ultrasound? Many pet parents will wonder why their veterinarian may recommend an ultrasound after already performing radiographs, aka x-rays. Radiographs are a great diagnostic tool. However, they are not always able to visualize all pathology. Recently we saw a patient who had presented to their referring veterinarian's office for vomiting and decreased appetite. The clinic performed radiographs and sent these images out for radiologist interpretation. However, when the radiologist reported no abnormalities seen within the gastrointestinal tract, we were called out to perform an abdominal ultrasound. We completed a comprehensive abdominal ultrasound and were able to visualize the GI tract in it's entirety. When we sent our images to our board certified radiologist for STAT results, they determined this patient had a foreign body obstruction within the pyloroduodenal junction, as well as foreign material within the small intestine. This is seen on the video clip below as a bright white, thin structure stretching throughout the contents of the duodenum. The referring veterinarian was able to get this patient into emergent surgery and on the road to recovery within hours due to the quick report turnaround time. #veterinaryultrasound #ultrasound #sonography #veterinarymedicine
