Here’s your game plan when your child refuses every food you offer ⬇️ If you have a toddler, there are going to be hard dinner moments - because there are going to be hard moments in EVERY situation. Follow @peasandhoppiness for more tips to make mealtime easier and follow these steps: 1. First, make sure their basic needs are met: Are they exhausted? Sick? Is your child TOO hungry? Do they just need a hug? Sometimes fixing these basic biological needs can turn dinnertime around! 2. Second, always offer a “safe” food at the meal. A “safe” food is one which you know your child will eat, so even if they refuse the main meal they still have an option for something to eat if they’re hungry. What if it’s STILL not working? 3. It’s time to set boundaries! Here’s a helpful script to follow: 1. Empathize with their request, then 2. Hold your boundary It might look like this: “You really want to play with your trucks right now. It’s so fun to play! Right now it’s time for dinner. You don’t have to eat dinner, but you need to sit in your high chair. Would you like to climb in your high chair or do you want me to fly you in?” Yes, this will be super hard - especially the first few times. But if you’re consistent, I promise it gets easier! Remember the division of responsibility: it’s your job to offer food and it’s your child’s job to decide if they’re going to eat. The reason they’re refusing every food might be because they’re not very hungry! It feels hard because it IS hard. You got this. You can do hard things. Save this post for the next time you’re SO frustrated at a meal, and❗️STOP requiring your child to take a bite of their dinner… (And this is coming from a registered dietitian who used to believe in the “One Bite Rule.”) It can take up to 20 “exposures” to a food before your child will feel comfortable eating it. Forcing your child to take a bite can actually backfire because it removes their autonomy! The good news is an “exposure” can come in many different forms. Examples of food exposures include: -Growing or harvesting the food -Helping prepare the food -Seeing the food on the table -Playing with the food -Watching you eat a food -Learning about a food -Seeing their friends eat a food -Putting the food in their mouth and then spitting it back out -Taking a teeny tiny bite Focus on offering nutritionally balanced meals and a “safe food” for your child, then allow your child to decide whether or not they will eat. Keep offering new foods in a low-pressure environment and you might be surprised what your child will (eventually) be willing to eat. Mealtime will be so much more pleasant when you don’t have to fight about that one bite! During the holidays, family members might encourage your child to “just take one bite” or “finish your plate.” However, pressuring a picky eater can increase their resistance to trying new foods. Instead, create a no-pressure mealtime environment by allowing your child to explore new foods without the expectation to eat them. Here’s how: 🍪 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐞𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐨𝐫: Let your child see you enjoying the holiday foods, but avoid commenting on what or how much they are eating. 🍪 𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Simply place new foods on your child’s plate without pressuring them to try them. Allow them to touch, smell, and explore the food on their own terms. 🍪 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭: Celebrate small victories, like your child taking a tiny bite or simply interacting with the food.
