At the ONS 2024, Oceaneering celebrated 60 years and showcased its robust performance across segments, reflecting on the ongoing innovation. We highlighted our contributions to the offshore energy sector, focusing heavily on energy transition technologies and sustainability initiatives. Including advancements in remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), autonomous systems, and our expanded role toward renewable energy, particularly offshore wind and carbon capture projects. Oceaneering has also been focusing on improving operational efficiencies and sustainability in its services, such as reducing emissions from offshore vessels with the Subsea Drone "Freedom" and resident solution "Liberty". These initiatives align with the broader ONS 2024 themes of energy security and the transition towards greener energy, which remain top industry priorities as the offshore market continues its strong post-pandemic. ONS emphasized the critical role of technological innovation in addressing both the energy transition and the industry's current upturn, with market indicators suggesting continued growth through 2030. 🗞️ Our portfolio company Aerones has been spotlighted by our friends and colleagues at LGT Private Banking, who explored the topic of robot-enabled operation and maintenance (O&M) providers within the renewable power industry. 🤖 Lightrock partnered with Aerones, a provider of robot-enabled blade care and inspection systems for wind turbines, based in Riga, Latvia, in 2022. It aims to make the renewables sector more sustainable and cost-efficient by prolonging the lifespan of turbines through diligent maintenance. 🌀 Routine maintenance of wind farms presents significant hazards. In 2020, there were 532 reported safety incidents during onshore maintenance operations alone. Offshore wind farms pose even greater risks due to their remote locations, often hundreds of miles away from the coast. Accessing these sites typically requires helicopters, ships, and technicians with specialised certifications. #Aerones has completed successful #Offshore technology tests in Scotland, marking a major milestone in robotic #WindTurbine maintenance. 🌊 During these trials, Aerones deployed its advanced submersible winch system, enabling robots to perform crucial inspections and repairs in challenging offshore conditions, including stronger winds, unpredictable waves, and rapidly changing weather conditions. In July, we collaborated with BladeBUG —a 2023 Free Electrons Program cohort startup—on a pilot project at EDP Renewables wind farm in Albacete, Spain. We tested BladeBug’s advanced robotic solution for wind turbine blade inspection and maintenance during this project. BladeBug’s six-legged robot utilizes ultrasonic testing to detect hidden defects within the blades. It also evaluates functionality of lightning protection systems, providing a safer and more cost-effective alternative to traditional inspection methods. This partnership with BladeBug underscores the importance of bridging the gap between innovative technologies and real-world operational needs. Through programs like Free Electrons, we connect with startups, transitioning from initial discussions to real-world pilot projects. Collaborations like these enable us to align internal challenges with external innovations, driving progress in the Energy Transition. 🚀 Exciting NEWS UPDATE from BladeBUG! Over two packed days at one of EDP Renewables wind farms in Spain 🌍, our cutting-edge robotic platform showcased its advanced inspection capabilities and successfully performed a series of #ultrasonic scans remotely using one of our non-destructive testing payloads. These invaluable #inspections provide critical insights into the health and performance of #windturbine #blades, demonstrating the precision, safety, and speed of our robotic technology in addressing complex maintenance challenges. ⚡🤖 Despite soaring temperatures, approaching storms, and high winds, our versatile platform, equipped with a modular tool bay was adapted and rapidly deployed to also perform functional tests of the lightning protection system. This ability to improvise, adapt and overcome proved that our unique robot, with its expanding suite of tools, is able to work efficiently and effectively to maximize the window of opportunity. Our partnership with EDP and Innovation@edp emerged following our participation in the innovation led Free Electrons Program and exemplifies their forward-thinking approach, embracing next-generation technologies like BladeBUG to overcome the toughest challenges of the energy transition.
