The safety of the trucks on European roads is in the spotlight after Euro NCAP - For Safer Cars, Vans & Trucks today revealed the first set of results for its brand-new TRUCK SAFE assessment programme. This is the very first time that heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) have been tested for safety. Out of nine trucks assessed, Volvo Trucks FH Aero and FM models both earned a maximum five-star ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ rating, while IVECO’s current S-WAY model emerged as the weakest performer with one ⭐ star. As part of its mission to achieve Vision Zero (eliminating all traffic fatalities and serious injuries), Euro NCAP has turned its testing and safety performance attention to the HGV vehicle category for the first time. The organisation has been helping to drive up safety standards by evaluating and rating the active and passive safety performance of passenger cars for close to 30 years, and launched a similar rating scheme for Light Commercial Vehicles in 2020. Because of their size and weight (gross combination mass of over 3,500 kg), HGV crashes are the most severe on European roads. Although trucks account for less than 3% of the traffic fleet in Europe, they are responsible for 15% of accident fatalities. Furthermore, only 11% of casualties in accidents involving HGVs are truck occupants. The remaining 89% are car and van occupants, as well as Vulnerable Road Users https://lnkd.in/d4wFp__R 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐅𝐮𝐥𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭: https://lnkd.in/df8UTnee #trucksafety #europesroads #euroncap #trucksafe #hgvtesting #roadsafety #visionzero #heavydutyvehicles #volvotrucks #ivecotrucks #trafficfatalities #safertrucks #vulnerableroadusers #vehicleratings

While moving towards the adoption of level 5 in CAVs, the most exciting valuable achievement for #Vehicle #Safety is the Driver Control Assistance Systems ( #DCAS ), which specified several safety #systems that must be included in DCAS-equipped vehicles - the DCAS #regulation by UN has entered into force the past 30th September. These DCASs are prime safety and effective systems to support #drivers (professionals and individuals ) to be safer on the road minimizing risks related to hazard perceptions and cognitive skills of Drivers. Studies by Insurance companies showed that early warning by 1.5 sec. can prevent 90% of rear-end collisions. Experts say that #AEBS is one of the best #innovations with high safety impacts on the occupants after the seatbelt ( even if we didn't reach level 5, these assistance systems are already here to #savelives ). Key safety DCAS include: 1. Advanced Emergency Braking System (AEBS): This system is mandatory for all DCAS-equipped vehicles to help prevent or mitigate collisions by automatically applying the brakes when a potential collision is detected [T5]. 2. Lane Departure Prevention System or Lane Departure Warning System: Vehicles must be equipped with at least one of these systems to assist in maintaining lane position and preventing unintended lane departures. 3. Driver Engagement Mechanisms: The system must be designed to ensure that the driver remains engaged with the driving task. This includes providing means for the driver to safely override or deactivate the system at any time. 4. Mode Awareness Strategies: Manufacturers are required to implement strategies to ensure that drivers are aware of the system's mode of operation, helping to avoid overreliance on the DCAS. 5. Collision Avoidance Capabilities: The system must be able to assess its surroundings and respond appropriately to avoid or mitigate the severity of collisions. 6. Interaction with Other Assistance Systems: The operation of DCAS should not deactivate or suppress the longitudinal functionality of activated emergency assistance systems while in active mode. I urge all authorities to track this UNECE action, asses the impact on in-country safety value, and lobby to regulate those safety systems to enhance the overall safety of vehicles, ensuring that they assist the driver effectively while maintaining the driver's responsibility for vehicle control. #Abu Dhabi Mobility, #RTA, #International Road Federation (IRF Global), #Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile, #Sharjah RTA
📢 A new United Nations Regulation on Driver Control Assistance Systems (DCAS), adopted by the UNECE World Forum for the Harmonization of #Vehicle Regulations (WP.29) entered into force on 30 September ❗ The regulation defines DCAS as systems which assist the driver in controlling the longitudinal and lateral motion of the vehicle on a sustained basis, while not taking over the entire driving task. DCAS are categorized as Automated Driving Systems corresponding to SAE Level 2. This means that while using such systems, the driver retains responsibility for the control of the vehicle and must therefore permanently monitor the surroundings as well as vehicle/system’s performance to be able to intervene if needed. “This new regulation on DCAS gives #automobile manufacturers the necessary flexibility to propose enhanced Level 2 assisting systems to motorists worldwide," said Francois Roudier, Secretary General of the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (OICA). "Increased assistance will go hand-in-hand with improved #safety on the #road, to the benefit of users, manufacturers and certification authorities alike.” "This new UN Regulation on DCAS is an important step for road traffic safety and the deployment of safe technologies assisting drivers. It ensures significantly improved driver monitoring in the use of assistance systems compared to current regulatory provisions, enhancing the involvement of the driver in the driving task. It will thus pave the way towards higher automation levels in the future," noted Richard Damm, Chair of the UNECE Working Party on Automated/ #Autonomous and Connected Vehicles. The first Trucks Euro NCAP testing results are in, under the body’s new Truck Safe program, with Volvo’s FH Aero and FM models receiving a full five-star score, while IVECO’s S-Way managed just one star. While passenger cars, and more recently vans, have been held to account by governing bodies like ANCAP in Australia and NCAP in Europe, trucks have managed to avoid the scrutiny until now. The first NCAP heavy vehicle testing assessed models across three key areas; safe driving, collision avoidance and post-crash safety. Testing also evaluated trucks for a City Safe accreditation that favours technology aimed at reducing inner-city risks. Read more on our website - https://lnkd.in/g27ZqUAE
