Safety Thought for the Week! Working at sea can be particularly hazardous! Fishing for example, is recognised as the most dangerous industry in the world. A constantly moving workplace, changing environmental conditions, enclosed spaces, unguarded machinery, fatigue, etc, all have the potential to make working on fishing vessels a dangerous occupation. But there is something that can be done……by controlling as many of the hazards on the vessel as possible, overall risk levels can be reduced, increasing safety levels for all onboard. To help in this process, the FISH Safety Foundation is currently revamping the existing crewSAFE Program. The new crewSAFE Shipboard Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Programme – a structured, practical risk-based occupational health and safety management programme for fishing vessels – will provide more guidance for practical intervention and awareness creation, supporting the actions needed to take safety at sea from talkfest to action! James Reason articulates this well when he spoke about safety culture: “There are two ways of treating safety culture: as something an organisation is (the beliefs, attitudes and values of its members regarding the pursuit of safety), and as something that the organisation has (the structures, practices, controls and policies designed to enhance safety). Both are essential for achieving an effective safety culture. However, … it is very hard to change the attitudes and beliefs of adults by direct methods of persuasion. But acting and doing, shaped by organisational controls, lead to thinking and believing.” In conjunction with these weekly thoughts on safety, we will be providing a free downloadable crewSAFE Poster from the earlier version of the Program. All the best in your safety journey. Let’s DO safety! Let’s be SAFE! #crewSAFE #LetsDoSafety #FISHSafetyFoundation #fishSAFE

🐴 Our Elf and Safety Consultant Cringle is having fun - but is it safe? 🧝♂️ It looks like our health and safety elf is getting a bit too playful on-site! While a little humour can boost morale, horseplay at work can quickly lead to serious accidents. 🚫 Did you know that unsafe behaviour on-site can result in: ⚠️ Slips, trips, and falls. ⚠️ Damage to tools, materials, or machinery. ⚠️ Serious injuries to colleagues—or even yourself. Here’s how our elf (and your team) can stay safe while staying professional: ✅ Set Clear Expectations: Make sure everyone understands that horseplay is unacceptable. ✅ Promote Teamwork: Encourage a positive culture where safety comes first. ✅ Be a Role Model: Lead by example and prioritize safe behaviour on-site. ✅ Report Unsafe Actions: Don’t ignore horseplay or reckless behaviour - address it immediately. Our elf has realised that while the site should be a productive place, it should also be a safe one. Safety isn’t a joke, it’s everyone’s responsibility. Let’s keep things fun and safe. Sign up for our CITB Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) to ensure your team understands the importance of maintaining a professional and secure work environment: https://lnkd.in/e9e2cyMe Together, we can eliminate risks and keep everyone safe on-site! 🦺 #ElfAndSafety #SiteSafety #StaySafeAtWork #THSPTraining #HealthAndSafety #SafetyCulture

A #sfetytour is a form of safety inspection that involves walking around a workplace or factory to assess the general safety of the environment and practices. Here are some key points: 1️⃣ Purpose: The main goal is to identify non-compliance and failing systems to improve safety culture. 2️⃣ Participants: Typically, safety tours are conducted by a committee that may include top management, safety professionals, and worker representatives. 3️⃣ Approach: It is usually informal and focuses on observing real work activities and conditions. 4️⃣ Core Principles: ⏩ Demonstrate visible leadership in health, safety, and wellbeing. ⏩ Recognize and reinforce good health and safety practices. ⏩ Identify hazards and risks caused by unsafe acts and conditions. ⏩ Encourage discussions on health, safety, and wellbeing. ⏩ Promote safe behaviors and improve general safety standards. How do you come up with safety standards in a totally new sector? Presenting a beurocratic body with something they’ve never had to regulate before makes for an uneasy future for surf parks. Unfortunately, local councils, state-wide governing bodies and other jurisdictions don’t know what safety standards to apply to wave pools. Yet operators have to meet these standards in order to open their doors. The good news is that the ball is rolling. Collaboration with companies like Urbansurf is helping to develop best practices that take into account the unique characteristics of surf parks when compared to natural environments and water parks. Experts are working to involve a wide range of industry representatives in the development of surf park standards. Manufacturers such as Wavegarden, Endless Surf, Slater Wave Company, and Surf Loch are among those participating in discussions. This collaboration emphasizes the importance of manufacturers, operators, insurance risk professionals, and lawyers all working together to prioritise safety.

Leading from the front with the lifeguards during their shift, allows the team to receive on the job mentoring, helping them identify areas for growth while staying engaged and vigilant during their shifts. A key task Adam and I have been focusing on is ensuring lifeguards are proactive with Watch Around Water conversations and performing lifeguard interventions. The Lifeguard Intervention Form is a streamlined tool by belgravia which is designed to document proactive safety actions within an aquatic facility. It enables staff to efficiently record measures taken to maintain safety standards, such as reminding patrons of the Watch around water Policy. This form enhances accountability and reinforces a proactive safety culture. By getting this data, it allows us to see what MPL needs and how to support the team. By creating a friendly competition between myself and the team on deck to see who can carry out the most interventions, we’ve created a environment that not only motivates them but also strengthens their ability to address situations effectively during their shifts. HSE's In Revision HSG175: A Step Toward Improved Safety Standards The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is revising the HSG175: Fairgrounds and Amusement Parks - Guidance on Safe Practice document. One of the significant changes being introduced is that all safety schemes will now be required to be UKAS accredited. This is a pivotal step toward ensuring consistency, accountability, and competence across the leisure industry. UKAS accreditation not only validates the credibility of inspection bodies and safety schemes but also reinforces public confidence in the safety of theme parks and fairground devices. At LEAPS, we fully support this move toward enhanced safety standards. As compliance and assurance professionals, we recognise the importance of maintaining the highest levels of competence and reliability in inspections, audits, and safety schemes. This revision marks a new era for the leisure industry, emphasizing a culture of safety and rigorous adherence to best practices. Stay tuned for more updates on how these changes will shape the industry. Together, we can continue building safer and more enjoyable experiences for everyone. #SafetyFirst #HSG175 #UKAS #ThemeParks #Fairgrounds #ComplianceMatters

This week is the 11th Annual Colas #Safety Week. 🦺 Every year the #Colas Group chooses a safety topic to focus on and bring attention to. This year our theme is: Stop, Think, and Act! Most often, serious accidents are the cause of last-minute changes, unexpected events without proper preparation, and acting without warning. This week, we hope to bring more attention to these issues and aid our team in the best course of action when facing safety concerns. Stay tuned for more posts this week about how #DeltaCos is recognizing and sharing this topic. 👏
