Six months in, and our Mt Roskill New Build is nearing completion! While this project was mostly straightforward, a few issues arose along the way. The secret mission for Day 2 of the Construction and Architecture camp for P4/5 children was to build a stable house on the island which had popped in the middle of the Firth of Forth after an overnight earthquake and had destroyed all the boats (hence the need for a new bridge on Day 1). Building materials and location for construction were discussed at length. One of the learning points of this day was for the children to realise that there is rarely a perfect solution in engineering. Depending on environmental conditions and individuals' priorities, different solutions to the same problem can be found and can all be viable, it isn't a simple case of right and wrong. So some children would have been happy to build more expensively if it meant having their house more quickly whilst others wanted the house to last for as long as possible. Some children wanted to build near fresh water whilst others wanted to find a the safest location should another earthquake strike. The next step was to test the compression and tensile strength of different shapes to ensure a stable building i.e. squares vs triangles. There was definite right and wrong answer here, and everyone concluded that triangles ensured a safe home to live in. https://lnkd.in/efiruf-D

St Columba's College | Discovering the Construction Industry with Kapitol Group We recently welcomed Year 10 students from St Columba's College, Essendon to one of our data centre projects for a week-long, project-based learning experience. The students explored our site, asked questions, and gained fresh perspectives on the built environment. An engaging panel discussion with our team highlighted the variety of career paths within the industry, inspiring many who hadn't previously considered construction as a future option. Throughout the week, the students worked in groups to solve real-world challenges they observed on-site, such as safety, sustainability, or workplace culture. Last year, they impressed us with creative solutions like PPE designed specifically for women—a need often overlooked in our field. At Kapitol, we're committed to inspiring the next generation, especially young women, to see themselves in construction. We hope to see many of these students shaping the industry's future. Rising demand for educational facilities presents a significant opportunity for the lumber industry. K-12 projects, in particular, are expected to rise, making them the largest sub-category by area. Since 2015, WoodWorks has supported 169 school projects, with light-frame remaining a strong viable option and mass timber gaining momentum in select regions. 2024 is off to a strong start with 14 schools reported in the first half of this year. Despite challenges like budget constraints, the push for sustainability and biophilic design continues to drive wood adoption. This promising market-expanding trend is demonstrated by the 2022 Mass Timber Competition-winning project Evergreen Charter School, an 85,000-square-foot, five-story hybrid CLT education facility with biophilic design elements. Two of our projects – the TTP Campus, Melbourn, and University of York Student Residences – have been shortlisted for a 2024 Concrete Society Award. At TTP, the exposed concrete superstructure uses a concrete mix containing 50% recycled blast-furnace slag, reducing the energy consumed in its production and the volume of slag sent to landfills. The thermal mass of this concrete is used to balance the building’s energy consumption further. The exposed concrete is a protected armature with a design life of 100 years. Secondary finishes have been removed as much as possible to minimise carbon waste. Characterised by robust pre-cast concrete and brick, our design at the University of York reinterprets the character of the 1960s West Campus. Exploring the sculptural qualities of the material, the project places smooth concrete alongside acid-etched relief panels, the patterns of which being inspired by the original West Campus artwork created by Fred Millett. The resulting design creates dynamic light and shadow effects, with concrete – and MMC strategies – employed to improve the buildings’ performance.
