Globally, on average, 1 man dies by suicide every minute of every day. Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men in the UK. Across the country, there are more than 395,000 men living with and beyond the disease. Many are dealing with serious side effects from treatment. Testicular cancer strikes young and is the most common cancer in men between the age of 15-39. As a woman, I believe in advocating for everyone’s health, including the crucial issues facing men today. This November, I’m joining the global Movember movement, which highlights men’s health issues such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health. 🧔🏻💙 While women’s health initiatives are widely recognized, men face unique challenges that are often under-addressed. For example, men are three to four times more likely than women to die by suicide, and prostate cancer is the second most common cancer among men globally. With cancer, one thing is to be cured, and another different one, to be healed. The emotional journey often starts when the quest for survival is over. But you are not alone. You don’t need to go through it on your own and pretend to be happy because you are cancer free and that’s what’s expected when, in fact, you’re trying to cope with and process the whirlwind of emotions arising. If we could bring coaching to people who, like Suleika, or me, struggle with the emotional journey, how would the post- cancer life and how we experience it change?
