Hydropower currently provides 40% of the renewable electricity in the US and is the largest renewable energy source globally, a position expected to hold through at least 2028. 🐟 Conventional hydropower turbines can negatively impact fish populations, just one example of why we need to update our equipment to better protect ecosystems as we grow renewable capacity. 💵 Traditional fish protection methods, like fish screens, bypasses, and nightly shutdowns are expensive and reduce plant efficiency, making them less viable for widespread hydropower use. 💡 Natel's FishSafe turbine designs offer innovative solutions that support fish passage without compromising energy efficiency or requiring costly modifications. ⏳ The time is now. Peel Ports Group, one of the UK's major port operators, has revealed plans to implement hydropower technology at its Queen Elizabeth II Dock in Eastham in England. This initiative aligns with Peel Ports' overarching goal to achieve net-zero status across its operations by 2040. Teaming up with Czech renewable energy firm HYDROPOL GROUP, Peel Ports will install a modern twin Archimedean screw generator at the dock's 30ft lock. This setup is expected to generate approximately 1,500,000 kWh per year, equivalent to powering around 190,000 homes for a day. Peel Ports will acquire this renewable energy from Hydropol through a unique private energy procurement arrangement. The generated power will not only supply the dock itself but also fuel the operations of its Green Automotive Hub, established in late 2023 to support eco-friendly vehicle manufacturing. By incorporating hydropower into the hub's operations, Peel Ports enhances its sustainability efforts and achieves full energy independence. As a consultant involved in watermill reactivation across Europe, Clément has contributed to designing technical and economic solutions for various projects that repurpose historic water mills for renewable energy production. He also works on wasted energy recovery, adding valuable expertise to the project. The Renewat Project aims to harness the potential of Europe’s water mills for small-scale hydropower. Research has identified around 65,000 possible sites, including 27,000 water mills, with the potential to generate approximately 1.6 TWh of electricity. By collaborating with partners from 8 countries, the project shares knowledge on financial models, technical skills, and administrative processes to support the repowering of water mills. This initiative not only supports renewable energy production but also offers opportunities for local economies and the preservation of traditional practices through modern technologies. Our Hydropower Business Line will play a key role in the expansion of the Cruachan Pumped Storage Plant (PSP) in Scotland.    As part of a joint venture with COWI, we will contribute to Drax Group’s pioneering project to build the UK’s first new pumped storage hydro plant in almost 40 years. This 600 MW expansion will significantly enhance the site’s capacity, supporting the grid in managing renewable energy sources more effectively.   Cruachan is crucial for the UK's energy transition, as pumped storage plants provide essential grid flexibility by acting as "water batteries," storing excess renewable energy and delivering it when needed.
