#WorldCleanupDay: South Asia is a hotspot for plastic waste entering the ocean each year. Two recently released The World Bank reports, supported by PROBLUE and SAWI trust funds, reveal that rivers in this region are major conduits for plastic pollution. The problem is intensified as the plastic waste management infrastructure struggles to keep pace with rapid urbanization and population growth. Today, the United Nations marks March 30th as the International Day of Zero Waste. This day is an important reminder of the critical need to enhance global waste management and promote sustainable consumption and production patterns at every level of society. As the UN notes, waste reduction is one of the most pressing issues of our time. The impact of waste on our environment is significant, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions and other forms of pollution. But the impact of waste on human health is equally concerning, with plastic pollution alone causing up to a million deaths annually in developing nations. On this International Day of Zero Waste, let us all commit to taking action to reduce waste and promote sustainable practices. Together, we can help create a healthier and more sustainable future for ourselves and for generations to come. #InternationalDayofZeroWaste #sustainability #wastereduction

The International Day of Zero Waste aims to promote sustainable consumption and production patterns, support the societal shift towards circularity, and raise awareness about how zero-waste initiatives contribute to advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The waste sector contributes significantly to the triple planetary climate change crisis, biodiversity, nature loss, and pollution. Humanity generates an estimated 2.24 billion tons of municipal solid waste annually, of which only 55 percent is managed in controlled facilities. Every year, around 931 million tons of food is lost or wasted, and up to 14 million tons of plastic waste enters aquatic ecosystems. Zero-waste initiatives can foster sound waste management and minimize and prevent waste, helping to address the triple planetary crisis, protect the environment, enhance food security, and improve human health and well-being. Zero-waste living can start with ourselves for better earth and better humanity. #ZeroWasteDay #BeatWastePollution #UIDIndonesia #SDGs #SustainableDevelopmentGoals
